Fuel smell in my 1994 Blazer

Hey everyone,

This is my first time to this site and took a look around. My gratitude goes out to everyone that participates here. Very good information.
I looked around on here and wasn't too sure if this is a similar problem that someone has had, but here it goes. (Just a couple of questions).

1.) When I go to start my Blazer, I hear the starter turning for about 4 seconds before the engine actually starts up. And after that, I have a smell of fuel in the cabin. After a few minutes the fuel smell will go away and I won't smell it again until I restart my car. Another note: This happens whether it is cold OR hot. When I get my blazer started, turn it off, and start it again, it starts right up.

2.) I have read about this EGR piece. I am thinking about taking that off and cleaning it for this problem I am having here ---> When I push on the gas, it feels like the Blazer hesitates and doesn't really want use all the gas I am giving it. It takes a little while to "catch up" if you know what I mean. Could this be because my EGR part is clogged? Or could this also be the fuel pump?

I am far from an expert on automobiles, but let me know if I need to be more descriptive.

Thanks in advance to all that reply!

If you have 4.3 liter "Z" engine(8th digit of the VIN), this may help. Up to 1994 this engine had many problems with the central port injector(CPI). Some of these problems included strong fuel smell and extended engine cranking before starting. The built-in fuel pressure regulator fails and dumps too much fuel. Last I knew the regulator was not serviced separately. A new CPI will run you about $500.00 at a dealer so you'll want to have someone confirm this is the problem. If it is you'll also need an upper intake gasket. Be carefull removing the feed and return lines at the injector as they are plastic. Hope this helped. If not...maybe the next guy.

i believe the "Z" motor has throttle body injection, not CPI. I think you ment to say "W" motor.

I dont think this could be an EGR problem, id check your fuel lines going into the back of your plenum first, make sure the smell isnt coming from there. Those lines get brittle and crack. If the fuel smell is coming from the exhaust, then yeah...it could be the CPI dumping too much fuel on start up, and you could be running rich the rest of the time which would contribute to the sluggish performance.

dont know if this helped any.

Vector006 is right...my bad, I meant "W".

Sounds like a bad CPI injector.

That fuel smell is always because of one or both of two things:

Regulator blows on the CPI Injector.
Fuel Line kit inside the upper plenum has ruptured.

Here is my job I did on my Blazer:

You guys are awsome!!!!

Thanks so much for the information.

I just have one more stupid question though:

The Central Port Injectors....is this the same thing as the "Fuel Injectors"?

I had a guy tell me that the Fuel Injectors are going bad and will need replaced. Was he talking about this CPI?

Thanks again!

CPI injector in your truck has one main injector that goes into six fuel lines with poppets valves which are batch fired.

Don't be screwed over, you have ONE injector.
