Hi guys. I have a 1991 civic sedan LX. I am looking for some sort of new tail lights. I have to get mine replaced because somehow they got warped and they now leak water into my trunk. I'd love to find some Altezzas.

I've seen 4G civics around my town with clear tail lights, but they looked pretty crappy. There are TONS of options for CRX and HB owners, but us 4 door people get screwed. I figure if I'm gonna have to replace my lights I should take this opportunity to see what is out there. If you do know of some altezza lights or something like that, then I'd really appreciate it if I could get a web address or something. My car is dark grey so I think carbon fiber altezzas would match perfectly.

I already have the clear bumper and corner lenses up front, they look great.

Also, I was talking to a local body shop, and they said that paint would not stick to my side mirrors or my side trim. I was wondering if anyone had any plastic painting experiences with these outer black plastic pieces. I'd like to get them painted the color of my car. I've seen some 4G civics with body color mirrors and stuff, yet the body shop says they can't. I'm just wondering what's the deal.

Clear tails look good on some cars but I personally think altezzas look like crap on any car except the altezza. JMO though. I only think they make the altezzas for the 2nd gen crx.:)

Yeah, clear tails only look good on a select few cars, and the 4G 4door civic is not one of them. I think altezzas would look ok, as long as they were carbon fiber altezzas. I think I'll just be getting the factory lights anyway. Guh... i'm gonna have to buy factory honda parts.. I can only imagine what they charge for an entire tail light set.

sorry to say but i dont think they got the tezzas for your car, ive seen peeps make them, but unless your willing to be laughed at, very hard, and for a long time i dont suggest that route. check on ebay for any solutions.

as for the painting, it can be done, the pro prolly just didnt wanna waste his time painting a small part of a car when he can have another wanting their whole car done, its all about stacking the green.

Try a salvage yard. They might have a set of tails for much cheaper than the honda dealer.

if you like doing shit yourself, and dont mind *possibly* trashing a set of taillights, you can pick up some clears, and tear them apart, and make them half red, half clear like i did with mine its not common at all among our cars...and i dont know of anyone besides myself that have red/clears that actually work:D

Yea or if you dont want to rip them up yourself....then just go buy some clears and paint them red or put red film over the brake area and leave the turn signals clear. :D

Hey Dude..When I bought my '91 4-door DX the tailights were full of water. The sockets were all rusty and half the bulbs were rusted in the sockets. I went to the junkyard and got "new" sockets for all the brake light bulbs (4 of them) from like an 89 Accord. Any Honda will work of that vintage - 86-93 Accords and prolly 90-93 Teg's also, I think have the same tabs and sockets for tailight. i would recommend taking one with you so you can make sure the little twist&lock tabs match up so it will fit in your assembly. Make sure you get the 3 wire sockets that take 1157 bulbs....tail/stop/ground ;)

You could experiment with drilling a drainhole in the bottom of the assembly to allow for drainage. I dried out my tailights (hairdryer or shopvac? would prolly work), and then I sealed the top half of them where water was running into them. What I did was open the trunk and seal anywhere water runs down the side channels of the trunk and might flow into the light assemblies. I just used silicone..sorry i don't have pics. A nice thick bead along the top of where the tailight assembly meets the car worked great. All this was done inside so you don't see it when the trunk is closed.

As for the center piece which is where the reverse lights collect water and then dump it into the trunk when you open it....(ugh :() I remove the center reflector part (6 or 7 bolt/nuts, I think a 10mm if I remember ;)) and then re-seal the area where the back-up lights are attached to the trunk with some good silicone. You never really know if it works until it rains again, but if you are liberal with the sealant (the gasket around the back-up lights is shitty and that is what fails) you should be OK. I also used silicone on the bolts/nuts as well, because sometimes water drips thru them too. The tailights themselves I have never had to re-seal, but the back-up lights I have done a few times..maybe the trunk slamming breaks the seal over time??

HTH  - I can't stand to see poor 4th gen 4-doors running around with lights and crap burned out and water in the taillights. if you have other questions you can e-mail me but I think I was pretty detailed in this post. :)
