not important, but i can't find the EGR valve on my 91 metro!!! in the haynes manual it shows it next to the air filter, but it isn't on my car!! i wanted to check it and see if that is the cause of my surging.

It's got two vacuum hoses connected to it; one larger than the other. Held in by two bolts and has a round saucer shape at one end. The EGR modulator value (with circular disk marked P and Q) is just above it. Follow the larger vacuum hose out of the modulator value and you then come to the EGR itself. Get a new gasket for when you put the EGR value back on.
The EGR could be the cause of your surging, but I would more suspect a leaking or cracked vacuum hose first.

Check it out directly in your admission mannifold. I just replaced mine yesterday. If you need, I can send you a shot!

Hope this helps.

A previous owner may have removed the EGR. I've never seen a metro 3cyl without an EGR valve. It cools down the combustion chamber temps. Not having one will cause you to burn out exhaust valves pre-maturely

Recently bought a 94 Metro. To my surprise, it also did not have an EGR valve, modulator, VSV selonoid, bracket, or even a port on the intake manifold to mount it on !!

the EGR valve was not required on metros till 92. some of the earlier ones had them for CA emissions. also if EGR valve goes bad it can cause a burned exhaust valve
