Will a p0720 code(output sensor) cause trans to slip?

I recently received a p0720 code and lately my trans is starting to slip.
Would a bad output shaft sensor actually cause the trans to start to slip?
Or would a slipping transmission cause this code to appear?

Is this a pretty simple install?
