I was wondering how many miles everyone had on thier Ingrigue/ Especialy cars with the 3.5ltr engine and when their trannsmission went.

My girlfriend has just over 92K on her '99 Intrigue GL equipped with the DOHC 3.5L V6 engine. She recently noticed that it seemed to shift a little harder than usual. I checked the fluid and it was brown and it smelled a little burnt but not bad. I though it kinda smelled like fresh manure (eww!). I just did a transmission filter change, replenished the old fluid that came out with fresh fluid, and cleaned the pan. I also removed the ECM fuse to reset the computer while I did this. It's been a week and it shifts noticably smoother and it seems to drive better overall. I DO NOT recommend having a the tranny flushed if you are experiencing what we were. I've heard numerous cases of the costly transmission failures on the Intrigue shortly after having the tranny flushed with around 100K miles on car (assuming the tranny fluid has never been serviced). A tranny filter change exchanges 7.4 qts. of fluid. The tranny holds 10 qts. of fluid altogether. This info can be found in your glovebox owner's manual on page 6-63 in 1998 manuals, 6-70 in the 1999 manuals, page 6-66 in the 2000 manuals, and page 6-67 in 2001 and 2002 manuals.

The engine runs great, but she gets only about 16 MPG in the city and about 23 MPG on the highway and she doesn't drive it hard at all. I've changed the PCV Valve, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, and tranny fluid & filter with no MPG improvement. The valve cover gaskets leak but we are going to get this fixed soon. They are covered under the supplemental warranty she purchased with the car. I'm willing to bet that many other Intrgue 3.5L owners also have leaky valve cover gaskets. We just had the electronic HVAC control unit in the dash replaced under warranty. Other than what I just mentioned, The Intrique has been a great car though. However, I would recommend buying a good warranty with the car because they are sophisticated and parts are also costly. The valve cover gaskets are $80 a set and the HVAC unit was $400.

I have 85,000 miles on my 1998 GL (3800 Series II). I usually go about 5000-6000 miles between oil changes. The car runs great and never uses a drop of oil. Same with the transmission. I usually have the transmission serviced every couple of years (new fluid and filter) and I add a bottle of Lubeguard (all the transmission shops recommend it). The car runs great and I'm hoping it will make it to 200,000 miles!

I had a '98 with the 4T60E that had to be rebuilt at 90,000. The mechanic asked how I drive so that may have been a little premature....the car is still going at 150,000 but leaks trans fluid like a sieve....needs some work but that may be because of a lousy repair job done a few months ago. Yours is a 4T65E which is a revised 4T60E. I just converted (as well as I could) to Mobil 1 synthetic ATF and am hoping I never have to rebuild this tranny.

135KMiles; 1999 Intrigue GLS; V6 3.5L; flushed tranny at dealer @60K & 120K. On 3rd set of tires. Runs Great! Never have had to service A/C-yet knock on wood! Any idea when to service/how long A/C will last? I live in Phoenix it is used A LOT! Just replaced the crankshaft sensor $300! But I hope it lasts at least 200K miles.

Oh my goodness, how lucky you are! And you live in AZ!! My '98 with 150,000 has had the A/C compressor clutch bearing replaced twice now - once every three years. The rest of the system works fine; they always try to sell me a completely new system - or at least a completely new compressor (approx. $1000) but have found a small shop that will do the job for $200 - including the bearing.

I have 65K miles on my car 200 GL The only problem lately (Knock on wood) was the iginition switch replaced under warrenty. However I do have a vibration when I apply the brakes from the rear. 1998 Intrigue, 120,000 miles. Had all the receipts from the previous owners, they didn't really do much and when they did, it was at really cheap shit places, so I know it wasn't too well maintained.

Run awesome.

It probably just could be a high spot on the rotor, which could be fixed when getting a brake job done. My dad's 2000 Intrepid (56k miles) has a bad brake vibration in the front end. It's nothing rare. It's probably caused by applying the brakes under hard pressure, friction=heat, so a lot of that heating and cooling of the brakes can cause 'bumps' on the rotors.

BTW, my Intirgue had it's ignition replaced also (by the previous owner tho).

99 Intrigue GL with the 3800 engine. At 55k, lost the first tranny. At 66K, lost the second tranny. On the third now, and at 93K, I'll have someone other than the dealer run a diag. Kobalt nailed it, problems with the 4T65E, but GM probably won't do anything about it. Last time I buy a GM, after 20 years...

I have a 2001 Intrigue with 84,000 miles. I just got it in January 04' with 70,000 but other than replacing an alternator and a power window motor (That some of my college buddies screwed up.) has been trouble free. Best part about it is the engine uses no oil, and I typically go between 3500 and 5000 miles between changes and I avg. between 27 and 31.4 MPG on the highway.

I've only had my '99 GX 3.5 for about 4k. Now has 89,000 miles. ABS light came on once, it was a speed sensor failure. New hub assembly was $180 at NAPA + installation.

Dealer said my car had a minimal warranty history. Crankshaft sensor replaced and a brake job.

I had been getting 19mpg and a little over 26mpg on my last trip (around 75mph the whole way). Since I got back, my mileage has gone to crap. Now I'm getting 16.5mpg. That's actually the reason I stopped in. Thought I saw a mileage thread somewhere in the past. Maybe it's that leaking valve gaskets deal.

Otherwise, the car runs great and tranny's good too.

Car is up to 148Kmiles+, last oil change the A/C wasn't cooling as before, the dealer refilled it and put dye in it-but no leaks found. They said bring it back in a few weeks, well I brought it back 2 months later because the A/C works great since refilling, BUT it takes about 10 minutes for the ambient temp to get comfortable here in AZ. Used to take 5 minutes. But after 15 minutes it is freezing.

Anyway, I took Friday for the oil change and check it the A/C they said there is a small leak in the compressor ~$1,900.00!!! Also, they say I have another small leak on the Power Steering. I'm gonna shop around the services and parts somewhere other than the dealer.

Btw, I've always taking my car to the dealer-yes I pay little more but I'm almost sure they use genuine parts and they know how to service their own cars better than most generic car shops. Probably why its been running great. I drive about 75 miles per day so that adds up. Its been a great car-and still is.

I've got a Plain Jane 2000 w/3.5 and 150K, have not replaced the Tranny yet and have had no problems. A guy I work with has about 50K on his 2001 and has already replaced his though. Trannys like to be driven hard with limited slipping going through the gears, and I tend to drive mine hard.

just about to roll over to 88k, since that I've gone through 1 Abs module/sensor, I rebuilt the transmission 3 weeks/4000miles ago. It still does the shuttering thing every once in a while, and it leaks oil like theres no tomorrow, i need a quart every time i fill my gas tank wooot....but then again i never have to worry about oil changes, just filter changes.

My 2002 GX has 98,000 miles but I've only owned it since June. This was the second Intrigue I've come across that I've discovered through carfax that was born a rental. Has anyone else's car been a rental previously? Are there any common problems to post-rentals? Mine was a rental for about 2 years and had 60,000 miles when it was bought by its second owner.

I was wondering how many miles everyone had on thier Ingrigue/ Especialy cars with the 3.5ltr engine and when their trannsmission went.

I have a 1999 Intrigue, 3.5, owned it since 2000 with 15k (previous rental) currently at 152,000. No tranny problems at all.

Have suffered through a couple little problems found on this forum. IT's been a great car, look super inside and out, currently getting 20-23mpg in my commute into Boston each day. I'd buy a new one in a second if they were still made.

I've seen this thread for some time now, but never posted on it. Currently, I'm just about to cross the 50,000 mile mark. I got my 01 GLS back in the middle of Sept. with 44,000 miles on it and it's been great. Now comes the great big service bill - tranny fluid change, coolant change, ac recharge, another oil change (Mobil 1 Synthetic), and any other things I may need. Anyone have a clue how much it would all cost to get done at a dealer? How much could I do myself? I'm hoping to get this car at least through the 5 years of payments, which would probably take me to 200k miles.

my 2000 intrigue has about 85K on it. Bought used with about 17K in Jan 2001 for $15K. Originally a rental car.

I just replaced the front brake pads with ceramic ones from NAPA $60. --These are good pads with a ton of surface. The original pads are ceramic also. These new ones are even better and they went in super easy and fitted rotors that were ok, but had about 50% wear. The rotors come right off and are simple and cheap to replace also.

For the tranny fluid change. Take the tranny pan off and clean all the mud off of it. Install a new filter and re-use the GM gasket. The GM gasket is very nice. You need to tighten the tranny pan bolts evenly. The torque setting on the tranny pan bolts is about 10 ft lbs or less = I don't remember but it's not much. I tightened it in inch pounds = I thought it was 8 ft pounds = 8 x 12 = 96 inch pounds of torque.

The tranny gasket is sold seperately with the FRAM tranny filter kits.

My dad's car is a 99 with about 150k miles on it. Hasn't changed the tranny fluid yet. Was a rental car with 33k miles on it when he bought it in 2000.

We have a 1999 with 157,000 on it. The tranny has been shifting hard at times, but no pattern to when that happens. However, it has used about a gt. of oil every 1500 miles for a long time. No blue smoke and no leaks. It has also been pretty consistant with 27 mpg highway, which is where most it's miles come from.

Our bigger problem now is that the engine suddenly stopped running right, makes terrible noises, and perhaps the timing chain broke. THis just happened, so it's not been into the shop yet.

113K miles. Bought in 2000 as a former rental with 28K on it. Runs like a top, I chage the oil when the light comes on ~ 5600 miles, and flush the tranny every 30K. At 100K, changed the water pump, thermostat hoses and belts along with the coolant and plugs.

It has always used oil, maybe 1000 miles per quart, but hasn't gotten any worse. Had the leaky valvel cover gasket, a defective AC fan switch, and that's it.

Hope it runs to 200K as it is a great freeway warrior. Other than the oil usage, love the 3500 "shortstar" motor (I see Caddie brought it back as a 3600 now.)

I had my water pump go about two weeks ago, that made some horrible sounds on the way home that night. The mechanic who fixed it told me the belt tensioner was defective and too tight and was causing tremendous stress on the berrings in the water pump, causing to to fail.
I doubt it would be the timing chain, they rarely fail.

Mine also uses a quart every 1500 miles

Our '01 GLS has 57K miles on it. So far, the car has been awesome except for the episode of intermittent hard shifting; the replacement PCM fixed that. For all intents and purposes, I stopped the oil consumption by running a "heavy" 0W-30 oil, the oil level barely moves from "FULL" even after 5K miles.

I change the oil, trans fluid and p/s fluid myself and have never had a problem (a trans pan with a drain plug makes the job IMMENSELY easier!).

Great car, I hope to get >200K miles out of it (fingers crossed!!)

Thanks for the tips. Right now, she's down for Lord knows what. But at this point, I'm still not decided if the investment in repairs is cheaper than buying something else with lower miles.

Spoke too soon, my crank sensor began to fail, causing long cranking times and triggering the service engine light. Only good news is that the dealer recinded his recommendation to replace the spark plug wires, saving $200.

I have a 2001 Intrigue with 68K miles on it. Other than oil changes, I've gotten the brakes and rotors and all 4 tires replaced on it. However, also had problems with the front right wheel bearing, so got that done and the latest was the secondary air injection motor. Now my front right side wheel makes a noise when I turn it all the way to the left. Not sure what the problem is for that, (will be putting it up on this board soon for suggestions) but will have to get that checked.

02 Intrique gls (i think) just turned 91k!!! Lots of problems, Rack went out a month after I got it, $1200 they also spied a crack hub assembly $300 and a loose ball joint $200. Now the wheel speed sensor is out which has had my trac and anti-lock off for some time. :banghead: The coolant level sensor, oil level sensor and the maf sensor are all going haywire! sounds like your defroster is on. automatic climate control does it alot. switch off defroster and then press the a/c button to take it off. plenty of newer cars use to a/c to remove moisture.

but now, im thinking my moms 98 has about 150K on it. pretty much normal maintance needed on it. had recall taken care of. done all 4 wheel brakes about 5 months ago, RF wheel bearing when we first got it, all new tires when we got it, recently replaced intake gasket and upper plenum as with plug wires and spark plugs (they were changed when we first got it). transaxle was flushed and filter changed, coolant was flushed 3 times now and seems to finally be clean! evap vacuum line replaced. sway bar end link replaced.

it seems like alot, but the people before abused it and it was stolen so it got abused. it does pretty good, a few more things id like to take care of, and possibly rebuild the valve body, add an exterior trans cooler.

My 2002 Intrigue has 59,000. Trany started to shift hard only in the heavy traffic. I took it to the mechanic and when he took it for a ride he did not notice any problems with trany. Any way I put some upgrades to it. And believe it or not but I'm getting 22-23 MPG in heavy traffic(Chicago) and 32-34 MPG highway. But trany still gives me a headache. Any advice will be helpful.

I have 2002 and it's got 92,000 on it. We've had extremely good luck with her. Although yesterday we started feeling a vibration at idle and for the first 1500 to 2000 rpm's at take off. I think it is a motor mount. I've done 0 repairs otherwise. This one was also a previous rental when the wife bought at 25,000 miles. She burns about a quart between oil changes with no smoke and no visible leakage. Averages around 20 city and 25 highway. Shifts as smooth as any automatic I have ever driven.
