85 Trans Am Fuel Pump Kasek 07-29-2004, 12:58 PM
Hi I'm new here so not sure how this works LOL My son has a 85 Trans Am 5.0 Litre and was installing a big stereo system yesterday. After installation the car wouldn't start.I've checked all i can and found theres no fuel getting to the engine. All fuses are good.Is there anyway to check the Fuel Pump or Relay? Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks Kevin 4onFloor 07-29-2004, 01:20 PM check the fuse that is mounted on the passenger side inner fender next to the battery, it should be a 20amp fuse. it's a sealed connector that clicks into a black housing mounted with one screw. if that fuse is good, have someone lay under the rear of the car while you turn the key to the "on" position, they should hear a slight wine of the fuel pump for about 2 seconds. also listen for a click sound from the the relay near the brake booster. it should click after about 2 seconds also. the fuel pump relay is mounted on a bracket next to the brake booster, their will be a few relays there, but 2 relays that are identicle, one for the the fan and one for the fuel pump, switch the connectors on the 2 of them and see if it starts Kasek 07-29-2004, 01:30 PM The relays by the brake booster are no the same.I know which one is for the fuel. The fuses are good but theres no power to fuek pump.Maybe he screwed the pump! Thanks for the suggestions Kevin 4onFloor 07-29-2004, 01:38 PM well i hope it's not the fuel pump, cause there a bitch to change. there is another relay in that bunch that IS the same as the fuel pump, it might be hard to see, but it's there. 89IROC&RS 07-30-2004, 12:58 AM well, depending on how big of a system he installed, and what circuit he spliced into for his power to his amps, capaciters, head unit and whatnot, he may be sucking power away from the fuel pump circuit, and even though there is nothing really wrong, there might just not be enough power to go around. i would say disconnect the stereo system and see if it starts again. also, to see if the pump is getting power, have someone put their head down by the rear tire, and then turn the key to the ON position, but dont crank it, they should hear the pump turn on, run for a few seconds to prime the fuel lines, and then shut off. if you dont hear it turn on, its not running, and you need to diagnose why, if you can trace power all the way back to the pump on the fuel pump circuit, then you have a bad pump. Kasek 07-30-2004, 10:59 AM Well we have determined that it is the Pump .Strange it's only 2 years old Thank you all for your suggestions Kevin Related Links Enter the largest automotive community on the planet! |
