Do I have a burnt valve?

Got the 93 Metro home today, and on the way home I noticed a bad miss at idle. I didn't notice this when I took it for a test drive earlier in the week. If I rev the engine in neutral, it sounds ok, but when the idle return to normal, it misses. How can I tell what the problem is?

Try adjusting your engine timing. That always seems to help misfires on these little engines. Of course, I assume you have checked all of the ignition parts (plugs, rotor, cap, wires, etc.).

Well, I put new plugs in. Motomaster v-groove plugs were on sale, so I used them. When I get more cash, I'lll put some Platinum +4's in her. I know I need a new set of wires, in removing the wires so I could change the plugs, I broke one wire at the plug itself, and one wire at the cap. I repaired them, they seem to be working at the moment. Cap and rotor are worn, of course, but not excessively so. I used a wire brush to clean up the rotor tip a bit. I do believe the timing if off a bit, the engine hesitates a bit when revved in neutral.

I recently replaced the plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor in my Metro. The gains in fuel economy and power were signifigant, as my wires were totally crap, and the distributor was a little worn. Rotor was fine, but everything else was new so it was replaced. A miss during idle was something I noticed too, as well as loss of power during acceleration. Recent replacement of my cooling system made me overlook the plugs and wires, etc.

For next time, check your plugs when you chang them, as they can give you an indication of the problems the car may be experiencing, or something you didn't know about.

Take a compression test. If one cyl is very low on compression it is likely a valve burned on broken.
