Dieing heater fan… I think?

I've been having a lot of problems with my A/C compressor
inconsistently engaging when I turn it on. To make matters worse
today while I was driving I think my heater / A/C fan began to go
out. It will still run but at what seems like 1/4 power not matter
what the power on the switch is set at.
I called my Geo guru buddy who said that it was probably the Off /
Low / Medium / High switch. I tore apart the console took a look at
it and there was nothing inhibiting the switch from making perfect
contact. I followed the wires down from the switch to where they
split ( two go to the base of the fan motor and the other four go to
the heater / A/C housing ) I jiggled the wires going into the motor
and banged it around a bit and it seemed to power up slightly only
to die back down again. I let it run for sometime and it would vary
from what seemed like 3/4 power back down to 1/4 power without any
factors changing. My buddy, who literally has worked on a least 1000
of these cars, says that he's never seen a heater motor go out –
"you would be the first" were his words.
I doubt the problem has anything to do with the A/C compressor
problem but who knows. Can you help me; any of your suggestions
would be greatly appreciated. Things to test, other ideas etc.
Thanks,

Recently I've had to work on my whole cooling system - new rad and rad cap, new water pump, and finally the rad fan. I would suggest that you check the relay for the fan and clean it's connectors, and my fan didn't work at all until I located the relay and cleaned off the corrosion. Now I have no heating problems - yay!
However, if this isn't the issue, then the fan sensor may be faulty. Hope things work out.
