How does a person remove the lower ball joint without removing the top?
The bottom A arm seems to be on a torsion bar type suspension. I can't get enough clearance between lower A arm and spindle to remove the joint.

You'll have to remove the stabilizer/torsion bar from the bottom plate, and probably remove the clamp that holds the bar to the frame closest to the joint you're working on. You might also try removing the steering tie-rod to give you some flexibility moving the assembly around.
Good luck,
Mike

put a jack under the lower arm, knock off the tie rod, pickle the lower joint, then simply push the upper control arm up and lower the jack until the t-bar hits the limit of its travel
