I have about 2" of steering wheel slop that I have been told can only
be fixed with a new steering box. All other adjustments have been
made to take out this play. If true, what is involved in replacing
the steering box?

Replacing the steering gear is easy, and there is little need for a rebuilt, a good used gear from a low mileage wreck is a good choice at around $60. Be sure to get the same year, and the pitman arm attached.

There are NO adjustments that you can make to take up excessive play. The ONLY adjustment provided is for the set-up of a new or re-manufactured unit. If it's messed with afterwards, you stand a very good chance of binding the gear up solid. That info is correct.

Expect to pay at lest $200 for any reman gear.
