Saw the post "I f*cked up my Camaro @ 120" by 94CamaroZ28 and I figured it would be good to share some tips with each other for those of us who frequently street race, or drive significanlty faster than the speed limit. I should preface this by saying that, yes it is "dumb" to drive like that but it is also dumb to jump off a bridge with a life-size rubber band strapped to your feet, but people do it anyway for the thrill. The fact of the matter is it happens. I almost always drive fast. 85mph on the highway is slow for me. But I still consider myself a safe driver. To some (who doesn't understand) this may sound like a contradiction. Anyway, the following are my tips:

When you are speeding:
1-Wear your seatbelt: obvious, but many will forget.
2-when on the highway, slow down when driving over hills: cops like to set speed traps right on the other side cause you can't see them till your within range of their radar. Motorcycle cops often like to sit under overpasses.
3-Watch onramps as you pass by them on the highway:Sometimes (more rare though) cops sit on the on ramp and clock you as you pass. If you see them before you're in front of them you'll have time to slow down.
4-Get a radar detector: the first time it saves you it will pay for itself. Learn what the false alarms sound like. For example, when you drive by certain places it will go off everytime (like clock-work), those are false alarms. Cops in different areas use different types of radar, the alarm will sound differently. Learn about Instant-On radar. If you don't have patience for the constantly beeping noises, don't waste your money. Buy a BEL detector and get one with SWS (safety warning system).
5-Never! Never! run red lights or stops signs. Unless you have a death wish.
6-Remember, you are not the only one with blind spots: especially on the highway. You should always feel vulnerable when you are is someone's blind spot. Bad stuff happens. You'll be amazed at the number of people who only check their mirrors and not their blindspots.
7-If your speeding on the highway (like 120mph) turn your brights on(even if it's daytime)! People are 10 times more likely to see you coming which will keep them from moving into your lane to pass someone. Flashing the brights help too.
8-If you're speeding on the highway (in the left lane, where you should be), getting ready to pass a couple of cars, if the car on your right is also rapidly approaching the car in front of it, chances are they'll want to get into your lane to pass the slow car. Watch them carefully, get ready to brake.
9-Know your streets: you probably take the same routes pretty often. Learn where the cops like to sit.
10-Use a decoy: if your taking a long trip on the highway and there are other people speeding too (95mph, for example), let them get in front of you. Follow them about 1/16th of a mile behind, if cops are ahead, they will clock them before you. Sometimes, there will be a whole group of cars speeding... this is always fun.
11-Try to avoid passing 18 wheelers in the right lane: they almost always get back over there. They know they're slow, be patient.
11- Anticipate when other people are going to brake. Look ahead of the car in front of you. You should be aware of whats in front of them.

Can't think of anythin else I do, right now. Maybe some more later. What tips do you have, if any?

i use tip #10 all the time. it got me out of a very hefty speeding ticket one time.

i was rode tripping with a couple guys last year and a ford escort was trying show me up by riding my bumper:eek7: i set the cruise at bout 100mph and as i came around a curve i saw a highway patrol sitting at the bottom of the hill so i slammed on the brakes. the ford went around my doing about 90 or 100.

i know the cop clocked me first, but i came to an almost complete stop in the rode and waited for the cop to pull out. he got tired of waiting on me and went after the other guy instead

^^^ I have a term for that..... "SPEED BITCH" .... that's saved me a few tickets:)

Don't take a flasher for granted. You never know when someone's going to change their mind.

Using the sidewalk as a passing lane is a no-no.

Hit the brakes BEFORE pulling into a parking lot. Nothing grabs attention better than lifting a wheel or two off the ground.

Driving lights are always a good idea if you plan on speeding at night, especially on backroads where wildlife can be unpredictable.

NEVER EVER speed in a school zone..... too much risk for everyone involved. :nono:

I like the idea of sharing tips like this..... if you're going to be a dumbass, do it properly :p

I have to agree with Kevin, [quote] I should preface this by saying that, yes it is "dumb" to drive like that but it is also dumb to jump off a bridge with a life-size rubber band strapped to your feet, but people do it anyway for the thrill. [quote]

"Speed Bitch" ... lol.. i like that
"if you're going to be a dumbass, do it properly" -lol...this one goes in my quote book

yea.. brights are sometimes annoying. But most of the time you can still see where you're going... so let me see.... annoy someone or total a couple of cars... hmm.. this is a hard one... I'll get back to you on that one.

the best tip you can practice: TALK TO COPS!!! they pull you over, they write the tickets, they know where they sit and wait for speeders. be nice and talk to em, ask em how they like the job and what they do. trust me, if you get someone talking they will give up information. Sun Tzu's first rule of war: know your enemy...

also, if ya speed, dont dip in and out of traffic. cops dont like that and will be more likely to stop you if you are driving recklessly. a lot of cops that i have talked to say they only really car about excessive speeding, unless the car is endangering other drivers...

the most important thing for any racer is to know your car. you should know whatll happen if you hafta hit the brakes at 110, or whether or not you can make that 10 yard gap to weave through traffic.

sykotic1

i dunno that they look out for em, i would think its common sense that a bright red car is gonna stick out like a sore thumb, especially if its speeding.

instantkevin
07-26-2004, 04:31 PM
oh yea.. as far as tickets go... i've had three speeding tickets, but those were all in my early years of driving, all except for one. Driving through Texas...on the highway, going over a hill, doing 85mph, a cop just happened to be driving the other direction and we came into each others view right at the top of the hill, radar didn't pick up the signal till it was too late. He was going pretty fast the other direction so I almost decided to try to lose him on the next off-ramp, but decided against it, of course, because he just happened to be driving a 1998-02 Camaro SS. didn't stand a chance of loosing him in my V6. I pulled over before he even caught up. "Don't mess with Texas." But I have now gone about 4-5 years without a ticket.

btw, I don't advocate running from the cops, but if you can conviently dissappear and get out of it, good job.

when there's a traffic jam, driving in the shoulder is usually a bad idea, cuz a lot of times there'll be a cop in the shoulder, and you'll have nowhere to go

Well I Was Late To Work Like Usual , Well I Was Doing About A 100 On The Slow Lane Because People Were Actually Driving Slower In The Fast Lanes, Well As I Was Driving A I Didn't Notice A Parked Cop On The Shoulder, So I Passed Him Doing A 100mph Well He Turned His Lights On But He Couldn't Get Freeway Because There Were Cars Behind Me, So I Just Gunned It, I Figured I Had A Good Chance Because The Next Exit Was A Little Less Than A Quater Mile, So I Took Off And I Dind't Even Look Back, I Just Got Off And Hit The First Small Street I Could Find And Took Off, I'm Lucky It Was A Windy Road Because Camaros Handle Excellent. Well I Didn't Drive On The Freeway For About Two Weeks Because I Didn't Want To Burn My Self, I Have A Red Camaro And There Isn't Too Many Red Camaros Here, So I Figured He Would Remeber Me, But Hey I Got Away.

Yeah, there's nothing like the adrenaline rush you get from ditching cops. I wont try unless I know I can get away safely, But I've done it a couple of times. Once in my RT Stealth, I ditched three cops all following me. It was either that or go to jail, cuz I just got done smokin. Slamming on the breaks at about 150 and doing a 180 off of an ON-RampRight after going over a hill. WHOOOOAAAA

Rule # 13: Get a phaser radar blocker and block the pesky porker's vision. They can't give you a ticket if they can't clock you.

Savage Messiah
07-26-2004, 08:07 PM
actually lowmonte, the blockers/jammers are a bad idea. They're illegal, if you get caught with one there goes any chance of niceness, and you can get a ticket based on the cop judging that you were speeding (i.e. he knows what a car going 60 looks like and what a car doing 80 looks like - and yes that can hold in court)

I didn't read through this whole thing so I don't know if this was brought up. The "speed bitch" doesn't always work... I know from experience! When it comes to red cars its sooo damn true. I had a red car (ford escort) and I got at least 5 speeding tickets in it. After I painted it blue never got another one. And I am yet to get on in my burgendy '86 Iroc, Gold '94 Z, and black '99 Z. Cops did pull me over for a lot of bullshit in my Gold one though... no license plate in the front, and tinted windows. The burgendy Iroc I actually got pulled over for no seat belts once... what the fuck is that? I drive over a hundred everyday to work in my camaro and I have never got a ticket in it for speeding.

My personal favorite is the time I was following this Prelude on the highway. We were both doing around 95 in a 60 and passed a cop on the other side of the highway. She noticed it too and pulled into a housing edition, I did a U-turn at the next place. I knew the cop would do one too to see if he could catch one of us so of course I passed him again. LOL, the best feeling ever -- seeing him look at you as you fly by doing 120 while waving at him. Man that was great.

I agree with Grease Monkey Girl.
Having boobs sometimes gets you out of tickets. I've been pulled over 3 times in my entire driving years. Once for having a taillight out, I got out of the ticket for that one. Once doing 106 in a 60 in my truck at 3am, got out of that one. The cop just walked up to me and said, "what the hell are you doing, do you WANT to die today!!" It was kinda funny. He just made me "promise" him I wouldnt speed again. (yeah right :evillol: ) And the last time was for going 136 in a 60 in my 300ZX right after I bought it (same area as the last one, but different cop). He just told me to slow down  .
Mabee it's the boobies, mabee it's just because I am not a smartass to the cops, I really dont know. I haven't been pullled over in almost 3 years now! (knocks on wood)

I just ran from a cop today in my beater 68 chevelle. I was getting friendly in the turns. And just as this cop goes over this semi-degraded hill just as I'm losing traction and burning rubber around a turn. I'm going up the hill in the other direction and he turns on his lights and does a U-turn. I pause for a second and don't even think about it. I just make a sharp right turn into someone's gravel driveway just as I go over the hill. I then fly down it about 30 feet and slam on the brakes doing a 180 spin just as the cop flies past on the road. Thinking he saw all the dust I made, I gun it up the driveway again onto the road and take a left just as he's doing his 2nd U-turn about 150 feet away. I take another left turn in the next driveway and fly down that driveway almost losing control. I take another left turn heading to where I just did the 180 spin and I was looking for an out and I remembered seeing a path that cut to the vineyards, so I'm looking for this open gate and I have to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting some farm equipment to do a 480 degree spin and FINALLY seeing this single lane path, I fish tail it through the gate and over the railroad tracks and through the vineyards. I zig-zaged all through all the vines going 60+ and finally got out on the main road after a couple of minutes. It was intense because I saw dust trails going after me like a quarter of a mile away. I just drove home with a slightly bigger ego. :D

I was litterally sliding all over the place in my big damn car. It was a v-6 so I really didn't think I would get away.

God I love my beater car. :icesangel :worshippy

Now I have to hang low for a while.

Absolutely amazing story man, thats some fierce determination... I cannot even match that, but me and my friend were driving in a residential road at night (he was driving). He was flying and we flew through a stop sign. I saw at the intercestion a cop was in his car (light was on in it) and I told him, he drove faster and we saw him pull out, my friend made the first right, and took off, we saw him following still, but closer...he then pulled a left, and a quick right. We saw a driveway with a car parked at the end of it, he pulled infront of it, turned off the car, and we both ducked...we saw the cop car fly by and turn later at another intersection.... He had 3 tickets already (drives daddy's 3 series) and that one would have finished him...

I just drove home with a slightly bigger ego.

i think that deserves a round of applause.

reminds me of my highschool days. me and a couple guys use to cruise around in a white 88 camaro with grey primer spots all over. everyone in town knew it as "the cow". we'd intentionally speed by a cop to get him to chase us, then lure him around town for while before haulling ass to the next town. he'd chase us on the highway as we topped the car out, (dont know how fast we were going, but the tach was usually 4-5000rpm in overdrive with the 2:73 gears :) ) then loose sight of him. we'd then cruise by him the following night and wave :grinno:

i know if was a stupid thing to do as i look back on it, but damn it was fun :iceslolan

Man... some crazy stuff. I've never had cops hot on my ass, but I have dissappeared a couple of times. The craziest thing I have done was playing chicken on a two lane highway with an 18 wheeler at about 110mph, back when I had a honda accord (no rice). I was in a big rush, and I actually was tryin to pass a car that was about 1/2 mile in front of me. I'm pretty good at juding distances, so I figured I could pass the car before this 18 wheeler got near. So I floored it. The little 4-banger accord takes a while to build up speed and so it seemed like forever, meanwhile this big rig is still gettin closer and closer. I could really feel my adrenaline pumping as I kept speeding up. It's some of the scariest shit I've ever done in my life, cause I knew it would have been instant death for me or a really bad accident, unless I calculated right. Finally passed and swerved back over in the right lane about 6 car lengths from the 18 wheeler @ 110mph and he was probably doing 75. I was so relieved, I had to scream to get it all out :). It was kinda like holding your breathe underwater for as long as you can, then jumping up to take a huge gasp of air, except with sweat, adrenaline, loud music, and the sound of a revving engine and me sayin shit shit shit, SHIT!, SHIT!!!

ohh running from the cops stories i got a few. OK these all took place in my stupid high school days. I had a 95 2.2L Sedan Cavalier that was slow as hell.

Ok so the last day of school my junior year, in my school on the last day we all buy eggs and have huge egg fights all over the city. So me and like 5 people are driving around in my car with a ton of eggs, we see these middle school kids walking so were like lets get em. ( Iknow im asshole) Anways we end up hitting the kids like 3 times, one girl got hit all 3 times. So were still on the same road after we just hit them the third time, its a 2 lane road with a ceneter turn lane. Im in the turn lane at a red light waiting to turn left when i see a cop drive by in the opposite direction, im like ohh fuck! Im watching in my rear view mirror and i see the kids wave down the cops, the kids point and my car and i see the cops lights turn on. Now im still stuck at the red ligth trying to turn left. SO i say fuckit, i blow the red and make the left, drive like hell through some neighborhoods, catch a lucky break and am able to cross a bussy 8 lane road with a divider and get to the other side without stopping, go and hide in some kids backyard for an hour or so and just avoid driving for the rest of the day. Man that was a fucking adrenaline rush.

Another time i was coming home from up north heading south on I75 in michigan, anways im doing about 95-100MPH ahead of this huge pack of cars, all of a suddenly i look over at my left and their is a cop sitting right in an emergency turn around radaring people, i was going atleast 100MPH when i flew past him, lucky for me behind me was a massive wall of cars and the cop couldnt pull out. Even after though i passed the cop i went at like 110MPH to the next off ramp where i ate some food at a little hick resturant.

I have 1 ticket and 1 Drinking and driving charge that was only a misdominor. The ticket is over 3 years old and the drinking and driving is over 2 years old.

Wouldn't that $800 ticket turn into over 2 grand from it effecting your insurance and everything? And it stays with you for seven years or some nut job bull right? My uncle got pulled over on I94 going 120ish in his brand new F350. The cop came up to him and my uncle said "oh im glad you pulled me over. If your lights and siren wouldn't have woke me up i could have hurt someone!" then the cop arrests him right there for "sleeping while operating a vehicle" i think thats what he said that they said, well anyways it was a $1,300 ticket, but it would have only been $700ish if he was awake. My uncle is the oddest guy...just imagine "Thanks for pulling me over, i was sleeping! Whoo just think if you didn't wake me up..." WTF!?

only if your goal is to hear what they say when they pull you over, a police scanner will give you absolutely no idea of where the officer is unless you live in a small town where there is only one officer, and then most of the time he isn't on the radio.....

wow, i just read through this whole post, and there is a lot on this thing. Glad I'm at work doing this, lol. Oh, where do I start? I have never gotten any tickets in my bright red 83 z, but I have been pulled over like 4 (?) times. If you have been pulled over for some bs reasons, raise your hand. If you have ever been pulled over because the cop wanted to see what you were doing in that neighborhood, keep your hand raised. If you have been driving next to another camaro just oogling it, and a car crests the hill behind you going WAY fast so you hit the brakes and go behind the other car to get out of the way and get pulled over with a warning from a heartless roadnazi (state trooper for the common person) for not signaling within 100 ft, keep it raised. If you have ever been blatently accused (falsly, that is) of having a loaded handgun under the passenger seat of your car, while you voluntarily are standing at the back of your car while they search it (last time I ever let them do that, they need a warrent now), keep 'em high. :sadwavey: Now, if you wanna tell me that cops in my town are not bad, then why do cops from the adjacent city make fun of them for being the way they are. Oh the stories, I could go on for ever...

i got my first REAL ticket about 2 1/2 weeks back.... i know it was 2 1/2 weeks cause i've had to walk past my car on the way to work since...

i don't care though, in fact i was actually kind of impressed. i have only had about 5 tickets (i deserved more) but this is the first time i got one for really doing anything wrong 138 in an 80 zone. I once got one for "changing lanes when unsafe to do so" cause the car in front of me locked it up to avoid another car, it was wet and i was going into a puddle, realising i'd aquaplane right into the car i checked the next lane, there was about 1.5 car lenths so i indicated and took the gap... right in front of a cop car. They pulled me up and told me how they had to lock it up to avoid hitting me (in the ass would make it their fault right? hmmm), i couldn't be bothered pointing out their brand new police car had ABS standard so i didn't bel;ieve them, or that i did it to avoid an accident and it worked!

i think if you drive the way we do..or did... you have to be prepared to deal with the consequences... be it legal or physical.. you should be fine with the results either way...

i still think that 4/5 tickets issued are revenue raising crap!

well i recently bought a 89 camaro rs. its a big change from my first car a 93 buick century. never got pulled over for speed obviously. i did get pulled over for obstruction of view or some shit(fuzzy dice on the mirror) suppostedly buying weed. sucks to be the white guy in a black neighborhood.(reverse racism! lol) and the stupidest one of all cutting thorugh private property while going to school. stuck at a train was running late so i cut through a gas station and of course a cop was the first to be waiting to go over the tracks chases me down and make me late. i have never got a ticket though or warning.

my advice to all drivers is learn where cops hide for street racing. they just about always hide in the same spots especially when its quota time. where does the money from speeding/parking tickets even go?

well, lots of things to reply to so here goes, first, if you change lanes in front of someone and it causes them to hit the rear of your car, it is not there fault just because they hit you from behind, it is in fact your fault for changing lanes unsafely. Also, yes it is true that some places have quotas and are required to give a certain number of tickets each month but what you have to realize is that 1. the quotas are low enough they don't have to make shit up, all they have to do is open their eyes 2. they don't get fired if they don't make their quota, they just don't get a good performance appraisal. Also, I take offense to the fact that you stated cops sit around and eat doughnuts, you have no idea what we do. Another thing, parking tickets don't count towards the quota you speak of so if they are ticketing you it's because you parked like an ass hole end of story. The money goes to the city. and we don't always hide in the same places, I change it up quite a bit. We don't really have that great of parties. Oh, and by the way, I work for a state agency and we don't get any revenue from our tickets but we still pull people over and give them tickets and people still bitch about it and make all kinds of assumptions based on their own imagination.....if you drive like an asshole, you get a ticket, that's how it works..............bitches.

well, pulling someone over without probably cause is illegal and wanting to see what you are doing in a neighborhood does not warrant probable cause, the whole cresting a hill thing, I would say you shouldn't be mad about that because he gave you a warning and I think when you get a warning, even if you feel you didn't do anything wrong, you should't be upset. Look at it this way, he could have given you a citation and you still wouldn't believe you did anything wrong. that would be worse.....I do have to say though, there are a lot of misconceptions about this, we don't need anyones permission to search your car if we feel there may be a weapon inside. If I ask you to step out of the car and I have reasonable suspicion that there may be a weapon inside, for my safety, I am allowed to search the passenger compartment of a vehicle. I don't need a warrant for that. Now if he was searching your trunk, that's a different story.....

TRD2000
09-09-2004, 03:29 PM
i think you might be neglecting the fact laws change from place to place.... see i'm definately not from your state... and from my window at work i can see into the police compound, when they have a party its big, we can hear it from work and the lights they have there light up the adjacent building better than most of the clubs in town ....hmmm

second... i realise that if they had hit me it would have been my fault but the fact was they didn't, it wasn't that close, but had i stayed in my lane i would have aquaplaned right into the car in front (cause he was braking on a "dry" bit and i was about to drive into a puddle) so if you are saying as a cop that it was wrong of me to take any available option to avoid an accident... go for it ..

i'll probably just listen less...

one things for sure... in most countries, revenue from speeding does NOT go back to road safety...

i wasn't driving like an "asshole" as i'd said this is the first ticket where i've actually been driving fast... or by driving like an asshole did you mean driving like a cop?

"quotas are low" huh fortunately i went to a pretty influencial school... and they complained about the tickets... as i said students have always parked there and the school owns it basically... the school was told by one of it's board members that it was because the police quota had gone up and so at the end of their shift thats what they were doing, the board member was the states top judge, the ticketing stopped.

i'm not saying all cops act like this, i actually liked the one that took my license off me, but a lot are just assholes....

Perhaps i should give another example of good-cop bad-cop

i used to be on a committee deciding on new traffic laws, at that time we were working on laws regarding bikes and skateboards. Sorry no cars in this one, although the same cop had pulled me up before.

anyway my mum's a philosophy lecturer (proffessor) and one of the kids in her class had gotten a ticket and had his board confiscated that morning, he had exams and was pretty stressed about the whole thing. My mother told me about it at lunch and i said "get me the ticket i'll sort it out" cause at that time we were having major problems with the police not understanding the law, and on average people will just accept what they say which meant nobody really understood it. She told me she couldn't cause he was in an exam, so i said well i'll go and get one for myself, jumped on my bike and headed to where the cop was last seen.

sure enough, the cop stopped me, and got out his ticketing book, i told him my understanding of the law, he ignored me, i asked him if he was sure he wanted to give me the ticket, he rudely said yes, despite my explaining the situation to him (i was being very civil considering i knew i was right and would lose the ticket and we were even on police camera where we were. before he started writing i asked him if he wanted to speak to his superior about it to confirm the law, he wasn't interested. So as he was writing the ticket, i was speaking to the head of the state traffic dept. who i'm on a first name basis with and had his personal number in my mobile phone. he told me to tell the cop to stop, the cop didn't, he asked to speak to him, the cop wouldn't, he asked me exactly where i was and i told him right under the camera pole, then i heard him running to the camera room, the cop finished the ticket and asked me if i had anything else to say, remembering that i had a right to comment, and have it recorded, i asked him if he had his pen ready, made sure he knew i wanted it all recorded, then proceeded to state the traffic act and sections withing that he had failed to adhere to, i was about half way through quoting the wording when he started swearing at me, by this stage in front of a large crowd, he was even stupid enough to threaten me right before he screwed up the sheet of paper (my comment) and stormed off... his boss was still on the phone, he asked me to keep him there but the guy wouldn't wait... at that moment, the police officer storming off swearing about me, two police cars came round the corner sirens wailing, the head of the traffic department ran over to me and asked where he'd gone, i told him, he ran back to the car and off they went...

I rode off laughing to myself, and on my way i ran into another friend, this time the deputy head of the states police, we had a chat and he said he'd make sure it was sorted out, i told him that i wasn't worried cause "bob"(not the guys name) was dealing with it, i was just concerned because this had happenned to other people and they didn't know, and that something had to be done about it.

Next time i saw the cop.... he was missing a couple of stripes... ticket like an asshole and eventually you'll get fucked up!

I got a ticket a month after I got my license and about a week or two later barely got out of a second that would have cost me my license. The first is like this: I just got off 11 hrs of work and was running one of those big can bags to the redemption place. I sat in there for a couple minutes before the guy told me they stopped taking cans at five, about six minutes earlier. I was extremely tired and now a little pissed, I got on the road and spun my tires at the intersection without even looking either way, I got up to forty (it was a twenty-five), my system was blaring and I didn't realize the cop was behind me until I glanced in the rearview mirror. He said he had me on three things, speeding, failure to stop, and spinning my tires. I got a lecture before he let me choose one, I took spinning my tires. The hillarious thing is that all the cans in the backseat had made the car smell like beer, but the cop didn't notice (thank god!)

i got my first REAL ticket about 2 1/2 weeks back.... i know it was 2 1/2 weeks cause i've had to walk past my car on the way to work since...

i don't care though, in fact i was actually kind of impressed. i have only had about 5 tickets (i deserved more) but this is the first time i got one for really doing anything wrong 138 in an 80 zone. They pulled me up and told me how they had to lock it up to avoid hitting me (in the ass would make it their fault right? hmmm), i couldn't be bothered pointing out their brand new police car had ABS standard so i didn't bel;ieve them, or that i did it to avoid an accident and it worked!

i think if you drive the way we do..or did... you have to be prepared to deal with the consequences... be it legal or physical.. you should be fine with the results either way...

i still think that 4/5 tickets issued are revenue raising....You were following too closely, and I can prove it.How far was the vehicle from you when youstarted to apply your brakes?Failure to answer will result in immediate conviction."REFUSE TO LOSE"

actually i'd been braking for a while just not really hard cause all the traffic was slowing... then something happened up ahead and the couple of cars in front jammed their brakes on hard...reasonably heavy traffic... can't remember everything... it was a long time back... regardless, i thought i was going to hit the car (i thought he was going to hit the car in front of him and i think he just stopped cause he aquaplaned) realising i was going into the water filled dip he just came out of, i acted defensively, and i'd do exactly the same again...

I'm going to make this last reply and then I'm done because I'm not going to sit and argue about this shit on the internet, first of all, that was a nice story about the skateboarding, however, there are federally mandated laws reguarding the use of emergency equipment on a properly equiped emergency vehicle meaning that lights and siren are only used in an actual emergency. What dictates an actual emergecy is it has to be a situation in which you are in fear someone will be killed or seriously injured and your presence can make a difference or you are in pursuit of a suspect that has committed a felony. If this "head of the traffic department" is such an expert on traffic laws then I'm sure he would know of this one, keep in mind it's federally mandated and every state is in compliance with it. The question then would become, would this man then commit a felony himself just to make sure that a ticket that a patrol officer gives is in compliance with state law? Why wouldn't he just take the ticket at the end of shift and talk to the officer at that time? All citations have to be notorized and turned in at the end of the officers shift so this seems like the appropriate time to deal with these issues, why would he respond with lights and siren to the scene and why on earth would he have 2 patrol cars with him? Although I'm sure that someone put a lot of thought and effort into writing this little piece of fiction, let me just ask, is there anyone here that would honestly believe such and outragous story as this? It's sad that you would have to resort to making up such an outlandish lie just to try to prove your point, the point is that in my career I have stopped one person that has taken responsibility for his actions, everyone else says, "I didn't do anything wrong". Kind of an odd coincedence that nobody does anything wrong yet I'm sure you have all been driving and seen someone do something that deserves a ticket......just food for thought
on another note, why would you say that the only thing open is a doughnut shop at 3 am? Why would we eat doughnuts to try to stay awake when the gas station gives us free coffee for this very reason. I don't know about your town, but I don't live in a very large town and we have a denny's, IHOP, Perkins diner, shortcakes (local diner), and village inn which are all open 24 hours and will give us free coffee even if we don't eat. Also, the mcdonald's drive inn is open 24 hours. We don't however have a doughnut shop that is open late, in fact, the only doughnut shop we have closes at like 10 pm or something like that, I don't know of anyone on my entire department, or the city that works in conjunction with us, or the county officers in this area that go to a doughnut shop when they are hungry, in fact, most officers go home or bring something to eat with them....think about it, if you worked midnights doing whatever you do, and you were hungry, where would you go to eat?

That's cute but I'm not in the US ... and despite popular beliefs, US law does not apply world wide....

that afternoon i had two meetings, one with the attorney general, and one with the editor of the local (regional/city) newspaper. I'd also stated in the police steering committee that people were recieving tickets because of uninformed officers and that it was creating confusion, and requested that they sort out the problem or it would become a council issue to properly inform the public. (ie, if they didn't do anything about it i'd expose the police force as being incompetent).

As i said you're story was cute although your reasoning was good it was completely innapplicable in this instance. I suppose you're just another cop who doesn't properly undistand your juristiction and what you can and can't convict people of.

thank you for your involvement thus far in this forum as you have just demonstrated willingly the GLOBAL police habit of jumping to conclusions without properly understanding or interpreting the facts.

osucordell
09-13-2004, 08:50 PM
your right, I did assume that you were in the US, that's my fault, I should not have assumed that police in other countries have laws dictating the proper use of emergency equipment, see in my country, when the police drive fast with lights and siren, it endangers the public. You see, here in america, when a car is moving fast, and someone unknowingly pulls out in front of it, it tends to do a lot of damage. That's why we have enacted laws that determine when it is and is not appropriate to drive in excess of the posted speed limit. I guess I just assumed that the same laws of physics would apply in whatever country you live in. Which country is that anyways?
So are you saying that where you live, you have laws that govern the use of skateboards and bikes, and you don't have any that determine when you can and cannot scream around street corners at high rates of speed with lights and siren? I apologize if I have incorrectly assumed anything about the laws of your country. If I'm correct you live in New Zealand, that's what's in your profile at least. I did some research and discovered an artical written by the new zealand police superintendant discussing the necessity to use discretion when engaging in pursuit driving because of the safety needs of the public. I can post the link to that article if you would like but i'm sure you are well aware that they have a policy like this and that this driving behavior is dangerous to the public, what with your important police safety board position and what not. Even though you live in new zealand and I don't in fact know all the laws of your country, answer this question for me, if you were on the phone with him, and you heard him run to the "camera room" then how did he show up in a patrol car within a minute? Were you standing outside the station or what? I'm just curious because I figured it would take a while to drive from the station to the location at which you and this officer were standing. Also, how did a crowd develope just because you were citing the act for him? Is it so crowded and boring in your country that you would have such a large crowd just standing around that would be that interested in this affair? One last question, will someone please for the love of god lock this thread? I mean damn.....

TRD2000

i'm living in NZ but i'm not from here. honestly NZ police are just getting this whole pursuit thing worked out, untill the last few months they just chased you till someone died. and no i dont think they have any rules regarding use of sirens.

i'm not sure what the laws are about lights and sirens back home, but they use them more sparingly and considerately to the public. usually just use sirens at intersections(visibility) or if people don't notice the lights.

bit hard to explain the exact layout of traffic conditions but i was in a particularly crowded area,
so it was just people stopping to see what a cop was shouting at someone for i guess.

i was also a block and a half from the police station, so its not a particularly long trip.

you sound like you're grasping at limbs trying to defend a police officer who was wrong, why would you do that? is it because police are incapable of admitting that perhaps they might be wrong? is it worth trying to uphold a lie, to try and hurt innocent people, just so you don't have to admit a mistake? face it, this cop didn't know the law, regardless of how much you try and disprove my story it won't work because that's the facts! trying to dance around it with trivialities is pointless, in doing so you have already demonstrated your own tendancy for jumping to conclusions, in spite of the evidence in front of you and just to try and support a mistake, the same way my demonstration "bad" police officer did. That in itself lends truth to my story. Perhaps you should have just said that it "sounds like" he sucked as a cop rather than align yourself automatically the way you did, it's not like he's your partner or anything.

display some logic and avoid being a "bad" cop in the future.

honestly, I couldn't give a shit less if this happened or not, it's not my problem. The reason I have taken the position I have, is because I don't believe your story and I think it's rediculous. I don't even care if it's true or not. I'm not defending him nor would I defend you if it is true because I wasn't there and if I have learned one thing in this career, it's that there are always 3 versions of the story, one person's side, the other person's side, and somewhere in the middle is the truth. This entire thread has somehow become a cop-bashing topic and that in itself puts me on the defensive. When I read posts like the ones contained in this topic it makes me angry to see that my entire profession is being lumped together and judged by certain circumstances. The fact is that yes, I have become cynical. The reason is because almost everyone who gets a ticket bitches about it and blames the officer. You can't blame someone else for your actions. In all honesty I am probably less likely to give a ticket than most officers. I haven't issued a citations in several weeks. I give mostly written warnings. I don't feel it's neccessary to issue a citation unless that person's actions have or could have endangered someone else, however, every time I give a ticket, the person bitches about it and acts like it's my fault. Read through this thread yourself and look at all the times someone has blamed the officer for something they did! Like I said, i'm not going to sit and argue about this though and I've already started doing just that....

Cops are not bad at all. When I see a cop on the road, I don't immediately think "I didn't do anything wrong" or "He's out to get me" or any BS like that.

Just accept that you are doing something wrong. I got out of a ticket by just taking it easy. I was speeding.. 61 in a 45.. and I see this cop at the bottom of the hill and I see him turn on his car, so I slow down and park right in front of him. No siren or anything. He didn't even have to move his car and he told me since I made it easy for him, he was just going to give me a warning.

Admit you did something wrong and accept the consiquences. They hate being lied to, just like me and you.

I don't think all cops are bad, i know some really good ones, the traffic dept head being one and the (now former) duputy head of police (he's now on the city council) is another. However i think that a lot of cops, even though they might start out great, turn out screwed up, possibly because most people they deal with wont take responibility for their actions. If you read my posts you'll see i don't have my license at the moment, and i'm fine with that, i was actually very impressed with the cop that ticketed me, as what i was doing was definately illegal but under the circumstances was not a danger to anyone, and he treated me as such. (i was speeding, but i had a good view of the road with no other vehicles, he was watching that section cause people race there, understandable, but i was just on my way to my girlfriends, i pulled over before he got his lights on and i never tried getting out of it) I think you have to treat each incident and each cop differently, not just make a generalisation that they are always assholes out to get you, but at the same time, denying that some of them are mostly assholes out to get people, and that it is unfortunately these ones that people remember, would just be denying the truth...

I get my license back in two days and if i see the same cop again i'll probably pull up again just for a chat... doesn't hurt to lget to know them or let them know there's no hard feelings!

Cops in my city are like girls. Confuzing, stuborn, thick headed, never know what to do, and whenever they GIVE us something it always involves taking something away from us later on. :iceslolan No offense but im not the best ladies man (as you can tell) anywhooo...I agree that you must treat each cop and situation different. One time I was in a park parking lot with one of my lady friends :smokin: after hours. It closes at 10:00 P.M. and I think it was around 12:30 A.M. So we are "having a nice conversation about our skool work and about how much we should donate to the nuns" :naughty: and this cop pulls in the lot really slow, giving us time to "put our socks back on from when we were skipping around in the sand" Well he came up to my truck and started talking to us.
"what are you two up to tonight?"
"um...not much sir, I just got off work and we're just hanging out and stuff" he smiles and gets my ID, runs it and comes back.
"This park closes at ten..." silence for a bit
"Oh sorry, um we just wanted a place alone to talk...uhhh...she's having emotional issues..." Then I leaned over to him and put my hand up to cover my mouth, then jokingly whispered "I think she is high, she wont shut up and she's talking in circles." He then shined his flashlight at her with a VERY straight face.
"Naw she's not high, girls are always like that." Then I looked over at Jen and she just smiled really big with a "oops" look on her face and did a little shoulder shrug. We all laughed and after that he just told me to leave the park and to follow him. I followed him to some desolate place behind a skool and he said that this was his old "make out spot" and that he was passing it down to me lol.
Some cops can be cool, but other ones are just taking their bad day out on you. The system is so unfair. My truck and MY money and MY tickets that I work for TOTALLY depend on how bad of a mood the cop is in when he pulls me over. I rather not lose $200, plus fucked up insurance for the next 7 years because the guy had a fight with his spouse or whatever. Im thinking robots... :p Just my :2cents:
