The pump is in the fuel tank, it's run's anywhere from 500 to 800 depending on where you go. I'd do the labor yourself to save some bucks.

If you have to you can get a pump from a junk yard for about $100 I have had one in the jeep for about 1 year and have the org. sitting in the basement. I,ll bet the relay is the peoblem

My opinion, don't fool with a junk yard to get a pump. You never know exactly how long it might last, or if it is 100% guaranteed working, a lot of junkyards do not give guarantees anymore. Spend the extra cash for a new pump and that way you will save in the end, not just money but time also. Not unless you want to spend the time and money doing it over again if you get a bad pump.

Only after checking the relay though.

Also I'd steer clear of the "remanufactured" pumps. When mine went out I ended up going through 6 of them before telling the shop to just put a "new" one in. It cost $100 more but it works. I paid $500 to have it done. I would normally have done a job like this myself but of course it puked out when the temps were below zero.

At Any auto store the pump will cost you between $475. and $575. these are all after market. OEM will run about $550 $650 at a dealer at least. Then there is the install. If the tank is near empty the install should only take you about 1 hour max. I did alot of checking on this when I was haveing this problem The after market is OK but the main thing is to make sure the pump is pushing 60 pounds of presure. The other thing is that most auto part stores will be able to get it the next day. Junkie I went to gave me a 90 day and I wactched him pull it out of a 96 GCL. Yes sometimes you are taking a chance but I would rather spend 100 as aposed to 500 and find out it was not the pump.

I bought a fuel pump from Chrysler for $300 and put it in myself for my 98.

I could be wrong but I think that 96 was the last year that you had to buy the complete pump assembly. After that you were able to purchase the canister that went inside the pump. I know that the pump that I replaced was a sealed unit and was not able to get to the canister. You were able to take it apart enough to get to the bottom screen and lower half of the pump to clean it but that was about it.

I somewhat agree with you EKM, but usually before I go and spend big bucks on something I am not sure about I am going to test everything that I can possibly test first. Such as testing with a multimeter to make sure that current is even flowing to the pump, if it is then you can almost guarantee it is the pump then, no current means you need to check other places, relays and other hopefully less expensive things than what a pump cost.
If after testing you have current then you need to find out if it is pumping, sometimes you can remove a fuel line and just quickly turn ignition key on and see if gas sprays. If then it is spraying then there are other problems somewhere else(maybe something cheap and easy to replace such as the fuel filter). It is a process of elimination before I definitely buy something. I have to know beyond all doubt that whatever is wrong is the problem and not something else.

I agree with you completely. When this happened to me I checked everything from soup to nuts. Relays gas lines presure grounds filters everything. At which point I was still not sure so I went and did the cheapest thing that I could do . Went to a junkie and got a fuel pump and installed it.
Still did not work. I then took the pump out again and it dawned on me:screwy: Ihooked up my 12 volt battery charger to the pump and it worked. Now I am really confused:banghead: . Istarted to trace the lines to the poweer and ran the ohms everything worked fine. Last resort I switched the relays in the PDC and the truck started right up. The relay was testing ok but not strong enough to pulse as the fuel pump would call for it.
