90' probe - Speedometer problem?mattoly 07-19-2004, 02:35 PM So I got a pretty good deal on a 90 Probe in pretty good shape over the weekend. I must say, I love this car, it's fun to drive and goes FAST. But there's the problem: I'm not sure how fast, because the speedometer doesn't work. What can I do to check to see where the problem might be? I've changed all the fuses, and that solved a couple unrelated probs, but the speedometer just doesn't move. Is it something I can maybe do or is this one of those 'you really should call a professional' jobs? Thanks, these forums are so far wicked helpful. Car Pal 07-23-2004, 11:19 PM if your cluster is electronic, you should have a sensor at the trans. or if it is conventional, there could be a cable. either way it could be the speedometer itself. bunnyracer1982 07-31-2004, 09:15 PM have you looked at the wireing harness.. maybe there is a wire look or sumthin.. mine was like that.. it wasnt the fuse it was just on the harness EAGLESFAN 08-04-2004, 05:00 PM Is your Probe a manual or auto? If you have a manual transmission then in order to check and fill your transmission fluid you must remove your spedometer on the top of the transmission case. If you have ever done this then you would have noticed a gear located on the speedometer when removed, that plastic gear may be worn down and need to be replaced. costs $20-30 bucks at a junkyard, just make sure you get the right type of speedometer, analog is connected to cable wire, digital is connected electrically. sitinduck 08-25-2004, 08:29 AM My speedometer works but not when its cold. It goes haywire and starts making a loud noise. If you put your hand in behind the steering wheel tilt and rub on it, it might quit. They wanted arm & leg to fix this at the auto shop a few years back. I just deal with it in the winter and watch RPMs for speed control.
