Fuel Filler leak-belts, windows ,etc.Grundelwalken 07-18-2004, 09:46 PM I just had my '98 Caravan SE inspected and it failed because the fuel filler had a leak. The tech said he thought it might be in the recover line from the engine. Frankly, I didn't even know there was such a thing. How legitimate is the problem? Is there an easy way to fix the problem? Is this something that has happened to many others? I am at a real loss what to do with this thing. I have had lots of little ticky-tack problems (ie. serpentine belt comes off a lot, passenger window won't roll down, rear wing window won't open, windshield washer has no oomph, loud squealing from idler--I know what to do with that one--). Thanks in advance for any help. UPDATE: Took the van in to Dodge and they said the vent tube on the fuel tank is broken and must be replaced. Unfortunately, the vent tube cannot be replaced without replacing the whole fuel tank...$800+. Who is the idiot engineer who designed that thing. I am looking for a way to fix the vent without spending so much. Any help will be appreciated. Ed.Ski 07-19-2004, 08:33 AM Your 1st problem the failed inspection, is your check engine light on? How did the tech ID the filler problem? In NJ they test the gas cap, if it leaks to much air they fail it. The computer monitors the evap system and will log a code and lite the service engine soon. My caravans (92 & 97, 3.3L) are notorious for belt tensioner problems. Anything from squealing to belts blowing off. I had a tensioner come apart just outside Orlando, FL. Luckily there was an AutoZone across the street. I ordered the part, bought a $5 socket set and a 5/8" wrench and replaced it in the parking lot before AAA showed up. Grundelwalken 07-19-2004, 06:32 PM The inspection guys noticed fuel on the inside wheel well/drivers side. They suspected the vent tube and failed inspection. No engine fail light, just vestiges of fuel. Grundelwalken 07-21-2004, 09:47 PM For those interested: Dealer wants $800 for tank and installation. Got a tank from a salvage yard for $75. Looks as good as new. Chrysler is sure a rip-off. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
