replacing an alternator

My alternator went out on my 2000 Blazer. In order to save money, I plan on making the repair myself. Are there any suggestions on how to do that or is this something that I need to let a mechanic handle?

Do you plan on replacing the entire alternator, or rebuilding the alternator? Anyone should be able to replace an alternator, first step is disconnect the negative battery cable. The belt can be removed by using a 3/8 inch ratchet or breaker bar in the square hole on the tensioner and rotating it. Remove the electrical wires to the alternator and then remove the bolts holding the alternator in place. You may have to wiggle and ply on the alternator because of the roll pin type spacers if they are present
