Does the metro have whats called a non-interferance engine? In other words, will it bend the valves if the timing belt breaks?

Having just replaced the head on my '89 Metro LSI it certainly seems to me that the only thing keeping the valves and pistons from colliding is the timing belt.

Yep...it is an "interference engine". Keep up regular scheduled maintenance.....or if you just bought it and are unsure of the maintenance history of the car....replace it all (belt, seals, tensioner) just to be safe. It really is cheap insurance. ;)

Will I thing it is a nointerference engine. I broke a belt on my 94 1L I was driving 60 mph and it didn't hurt the engine at all mat be the 97 is a interference engine but the 94 is not. I hope this helps.
