90 Accord Starting and Transmission Problemrodss67 07-13-2004, 09:28 PM My 90 Accord has developed a couple of new problems. Sometimes after it sits for a day or so the motor acts as if it does not want to start. It turns but will not fire. I did notice the check engine light is on while it turns. If I then stop and wait about 10 seconds. I fires right up and runs fine with no check engine light. I am leaning towards a fuel pump but not sure. The second thing is that when it first starts the "S" light for the sports mode of the automatic transmission will blink and the car barely moves. If you then shut the car off and restart it (sometimes you need to do this a couple of times) it stops blinking and runs fine. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Rodney lgrouper03 07-16-2004, 04:19 PM I would suspect the main relay. Here is a link that shows how to replace it. http://autorepair.about.com/cs/doityourself/l/bl_hmr_1.htm rodss67 07-17-2004, 01:36 AM When you say main relay, is this the same thing as the fuel relay or is this something different and what does it control? How much should I expect to pay for this and is it a Honda only part? Thanks. lgrouper03 07-20-2004, 06:00 PM I don't know if this is also called the fuel relay. I've never heard it called that, but it could be I guess. I know if the main relay doesn't work, then the fuel pump will not turn on. I believe the price for one of these relays at the Honda dealer is around $70 (for the part only). I had mine replaced at the dealer for $169 total. Now that I know what the problem was, I would do it myself next time, if there is a next time. I think I have seen on other posts that you can buy this part somewhere other than the dealer - like Autozone for example. rodss67 07-20-2004, 09:41 PM Thanks, did you experiance the same problems I am having? lgrouper03 07-22-2004, 03:59 PM My symptoms were: 1) Sometimes wouldn't start - mostly after sitting in the hot sun for a while. 2) Sometimes it would "cut out" (quickly turn off and then back on) while going down the highway. 3) Sometimes it would accelerate from a stop extremely slow. It was starting out in 3rd or 4th gear. The "S" light would flash when it did this. I recently had a friend (with an Accord) whose main relay failed. His symptoms were slightly different than mine, but quite similar similar. I recommended replacing the main relay. He had a mechanic inspect the main relay (you can examine the solder joints if you're so inclined) and it turned out to be bad. He replaced it and the problem went away. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
