You pay for cable, digital cable, satelite, etc..., but once it's paid, you can't get the money back anyway, so it's a sunk cost (accounting term). Therefore, once it's paid for, any other benefits can be considered free.

Also, you can just figure that you pay the $40-100 a month for MTV or CNN, and all the other channels are free. :D

In any case, I used the term "free" in contrast to renting the movie or ordering Pay-Per-View.
