HELP 1991 Caprice LT1 OR NOTclason69 07-08-2004, 11:12 PM hello i am currently trying to purchase a 1991 caprice, with a 5.7 Lt1 so the seller says. He did not say the motor was changed he only said it was an "5.7 litre lt1 corvette engine" But my research shows the lt1 was not put in the caprice untill 1993\1994 he also says "the car will do 139 mph when the digtital spedominer stopes HELP how do i know if the motor is an LT1 with 260 hp or a regular 5.7 with 195 hp. thanks burnM 07-08-2004, 11:33 PM Check the vin # on the car.... 8th digit to be exact. E - 5.0 tbi 7 - 5.7 tbi P - 5.7 mpfi W - 4.3 mpfi Jeremy-WI 07-09-2004, 06:27 PM Ask him if its the original motor, if he says it is, check the RPO's in the glove box or wherever they are on that car and look for LT1 clason69 07-09-2004, 08:09 PM hey thanks for the info i seen your caprice looks great any other tips about the car i should know drop me a line the one i am looking at has 132K and is supose to be an ex police car. What is the diff. between the 5.7 tbi and the 5.7 mpfi burnM 07-10-2004, 12:42 AM TBI - would be throttle body injection. If you remove the air filter housing, the tbi unit sort of looks like a carburator. MPFI - would be multi port fuel injection. After removing the air filter housing, you should be able to see fuel rails that run front to back along the intake manifold. As far as I know about these cars, the LT1 (Corvette derivative) wasn't offered until '94. But don't quote me on that. I'm still learning about the '91 - '96 Caprices.... Every other Caprice I've had was '87 or earlier. Might I suggest getting the car inspected by a certified mechanic before you buy it? It's always a good idea to do with a used auto. While you're there, ask the mechanic what exactly is under the hood. Short of showing us a picture of the engine, that would probably be the easiest way to identify the engine. Thanks for the compliment on the car:) I've just recently painted it and added a few things.... I'll see about putting up some pics that do it justice. clason69 07-11-2004, 10:49 AM thanks burnM for the info i check the vin number of my caprice and it say on carfax that it has a 5.7 tbi whats yours so i am still doing checking maybe this car really does have an LT1 in it if it does i can't pass up the price. CD Smalley 07-11-2004, 06:29 PM I have to say that if your seller is trying to sell you a car with an LT1 and a 12 bolt posi, which this car would NEVER have come with from the factory, I'd run and keep my money. If he's telling you these things to sell the car, I wonder what he's not telling you about the car. Either he doesn't really know and is an idiot or he is a liar. Either way unless he's selling the car for $500 or less I'd run. clason69 07-13-2004, 10:01 PM hello cd smalley thanks for the great advice this car is suppose to be an ex-police car with all the dressings and it was suppose to be the fire chiefs car later. he is selling the car for $900 or best offer should i run what if its true........ burnM 07-14-2004, 01:31 AM I paid 1200 cdn for mine. I had to replace the tranny because I blew 2nd gear and reverse shortly after buying it (big surprise). This car is also an ex-cruiser (from the RCMP). It's nothing special, no LT1, but I love it. I've put about 1500 - 2000 into it since I bought it. I've just finished repainting it. Not bad for my first time eh? :naughty: And now I'm still adding a thing or two to get it the way I'd like. Some might say that I've blown too much money on it, but it's my baby. I love this car! So, my advice to you would be: Check out the car as much as you can before you buy it. Make sure that it is what you want. And last of all ... ENJOY IT! If you get it..... CD Smalley 07-14-2004, 08:27 PM Well $900 sounds like it might be OK. Just keep in mind what burnm had to spend just after getting his car. I think everyone of us who has ever bought a 9c1 would have a similar story. Offer him $650 and see if he'll take it. Without seeing the car.... $750 tops. burnM 07-14-2004, 11:20 PM ^^^Well said clason69 07-15-2004, 01:26 AM thanks guys....you've been great i am going tomarrow to check out the car don't think i am driving it but i am going to count the bolts in the rear end and try to get a pic of the motor i'll post as soon as i can CD Smalley 07-15-2004, 06:55 AM Good luck. I look forward to see the pics! vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
