Auto vs Manual transDanimal420 07-01-2004, 11:32 PM How limiting is an auto transmission? Brian R. 07-01-2004, 11:44 PM Limiting in what way? Your driving habits? Engine power? Vehicle performance? Traction? what? Danimal420 07-02-2004, 10:08 PM Limiting in what way? Your driving habits? Engine power? Vehicle performance? Traction? what? I heard that Auto transmissions are limiting in hill climbing, as well as steep down hills. I have been told that a manual trans is just better. Is their any truth to this? Brian R. 07-02-2004, 10:20 PM Uphill, an AT will be the same if the torque converter is locked (>50 mph). Below 45 mph, an AT is less efficient (burning up power - heating up). Downhill they are the same if the torgue converter is locked, but unlocked, the AT provides less braking torque at the same gear ratio. There is nothing stopping you from going to a lower gear with either tranny. One thing an AT has going for it is that it is much better for an inexperienced driver. You will never lug the engine or overrev it. It keeps the engine more or less in the power band up a hill. Thanks for the help! :) I have an auto right now but I think that I will go with a manual when I get my next 4 runner an 85. I guess I will need to practice to get comfortable with a manual, but that should be a hole lot of fun :smokin: . Brian R. 07-03-2004, 09:12 PM Manual transmissions are definitely the way to go unless your truck is for commuting in stop and go traffic on a daily basis. cacattack 07-06-2004, 10:03 PM who cares automatics blow  vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
