SW20 is the chassis = 2nd Gen MR2 from 1990-1998

SW21 ~ Non-Turbo
SW20 ~ Turbo

One time I'd have to challenge this guy ^

there was a post on mr2oc a while back about vin numbers...

because i've been confused before too, seeing sw21, 20, 22, and they weren't always consistently turbo or na. I'll have to search for the post

c im not the only that noticed that. u noe how ur VIN number would tell u that if its either JTSW20... or JTSW21...or JTSW22... and i would think that the numbers at the ends of those number i just showed u meant the engine size (cc). I have the JTSW22 but im turbo. So can some one find that out cause im thinkin either it had a 2.2 n/a in that chassis, before i bought w/ the turbo motor in it.

I should have clarified, what I posted is 100% accurate for North America.
There are SW20 vins on Turbo cars in the rest of the world.

The number in no way shape or form relates to the engine displacement.
Please note, there may be "sw21"s with 3sgte engines in them ... that does not mean they came that way. Lots of people do "swaps."

that sw22 2.2 ltr originall thing might make some sense cause we never got the 2.2 over here....
mines sw20 original jdm turbo. came out from japan in 97.

sw22 = 2.2 liter does not make sense.

The sw22s are turbo 2.0 liter engines.
The sw21s are the NA 2.2 liter engine.

that might not be relevent i work at a salvage yard and deal with vin #s all the time. The sixth digit corresponds to the tranny the 8th digit corresponds to the engine and the 10th corresponds to the year of the car im not sure what all the others do but the first part JT2sw... doesnt have anything to do with it in fact all toyotas start with JT2

the JT2 is most likely the "model country" according to the supra tags, E is for japan, and will be on all cars intended for japan, for the mr2 the sw20 is definately the model, there should be a chassis number after it which is purely a number, engine/gearbox should have its own section as should color/trim and where it was built. i'll try and find a better one for the mr2.

For what it's worth:
I've found an explaination for each digit in a service manual for my
previous car.

ok, here's an example of a ID code:

4 P 3 B S 3 4 R 1 N E 0 0 0 0 0 1

1st digit: country, 4 = USA
2nd digit: Make, P = plymouth
3rd digit: Vehicle type, 3 = passenger car
4th digit: Others, B = manual seat belt, C = auto seat belt
5th digit: Line, S = Laser or Talon FWD
6th digit: Price class, 3 = Medium, 4 = High, 5 = Premium, 6 = Special
7th digit: Body, 4 = three door hatch back, etc
8th digit: Engine, T = 1.8L, R = 2.0L, U = 2.0L turbo
9th digit: Check digits, this is a single number or letter x used to verify
the accuracy of transcription of vehicle ID number
10th digit: model year, N = 1992
11th digit: Plant, E = DSM
12th-17th digit: Serial number

What each digit represents is universal, the example I gave after the
definition of the digit is variable.
