Anyone know whats the best and safest way, the G came with very light tint when I bought it and I want to put a darker tint. Obviously I'll have to remove the existing crappy tint but I don't know the best way to do it :)

Thanks for your help :)

Thanks for reminding me. I have to look this up myself. I have to remove the tint from my 944. There is good info in the SE-R Mailing List archives. I'm about to search them myself.

i heard to put a thick coat of ammonia to soften the tint film and then take a razor and peel if off little by little. depends on how old the film is too...if its rather new, you can probably take a heat gun and peel it off with a razor.

id just take it to a tint place and have it done... so much quicker and easier. :p

the early model Gs (around 1993) came with two types of glass...

one was smoked and the other had a tinge of blue to it similar to the late model mercedes models (1998+).

sooooo-

that slight tinge of brown on your window... may not be tint- it just may be the smoked glass that came with your car.

i found this out the hard way- because somebody broke my rear right door window (the lil triangle part) and i had a glass shop replace it. well- they ordered the glass (wrong type- they ordered blue)- found some aftermarket tint to add to it so that it would look the same as the other windows (which were the smoked ones with tint) and they proceeded to put the window in.

well- needless to say- the color is TOTALLY OFF...

ah- my little hacked together G is so ghetto...

No it really does have a film of tint on it. Not smoked or anything. Tint guys wanna charge me like 80$ to take off the existing film so thats why I want to do it myself.

Yeah the ammonia idea might work maybe I'll try that.

Heat gun too I think might do the trick.

one of my collegues's bro does tinting for a living, so asking him what the real trick is. should have an answer this week.

$80 to peel it off isn't a bad deal, compared to $150 here in chicago...da da damn!!!

im planning to peel off this limo-black tint I have on my lude since I no longer park outside anyways and keeps attracting cops. :(

more info soon.

I did this just last weekend. Someone had put that cheap ass purple tint from about 1985 in the G20, and it was starting to bubble on top of that. We used razorblades for the side windows and were able to pull the tint off in sheets. The back windows were tricky with the defreoster and antenna in it. Used the same method with the razorblade but it took a lot longer. Most auto parts stores have windows tint remover, we grabbed 2 bottles of that and were able to get the goo off the entire bit of all of the windows. Took me and my wife about 2-3 hours total, so it wasn't easy. I tested the rear window defogger and it still works like a champ, so I'll call the job a success.
