Hey guys, I need some help. My wifes Key FOB for the 1996 Grand Cherokee took a dump so I got a new one on ebay. It's a 3 button one (with panic button). I can't find how to program it anywhere. I really don't care to pay somone on ebay $10-15 when somebody here knows how to do it.

Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks

yeah my jeep dealer wants 45 bucks also... i've read online that you can't just program the remote... you need some kind of transmitter, something the dealer has...

it can't be programmed by opening doors, locking doors, etc.

I had to purchase a key fob from my dealer some time back and they told me that they have to input some code from the fob into the computer in order for it to work correctly. I am not sure if this is accurate on wether or not you can do it yourself. I just went ahead and paid the mony to the dealer to have it done, it took like 10 minutes and they were done. Good Luck!

I also own a 96 JGC and bought an additional fob through e-bay. Did you ever get an answer on how to program them? I would be interested to know. Thanks

I have a 98 GC and the exact same problem, over the years I had lost both the keyless entry fobs and bought a matching set on e-bay for like 20 bones. I posted on here and tried every magical voodoo trick (sans dead chicken ritual) on my GC and finally had to give in and go to my local rip you off Jeep dealer and have it done. From what I understand, only the dealer can do it. They should only charge you like $50.00. Good luck.

Programming the RKE transmitter access codes requires the use of a DRBIII scan tool, so if you need to replace one you'll need to visit your local dealer to have this done.

Thanks for your quick reply, my only problem is that I live in Belize in Central America, and there ain't no such thing as a local dealer, so if there is a magic potion, and I am desperate enough to try the chicken bones..... Anyone any further ideas?

Open a jeep dealer? Might be profitable. You do need a scan tool and a tech. Good luck bud.

Buy a DRBIII scan tool. there's a used one on ebay for the everyday low price of about $1700. that's what you'll need to program it

Last and final idea: Insert key in door you want opened, turn key thus unlocking door. It's old skool, i know, but that's option B. Wish there were better news for ya.

Maybe the only other option would be to buy and install an aftermarket alarm or remote starter and install that. Then on you'd use that remote.
