oil pressure & rislone ring seal ??

In previous posts i have posted that my oil pressure is consistanly at 20 according to the interior gauge.. Until i drive for a bout 20-30 min and at idle it will drop to 0 and bouce from 0 to 10 t o20 until i hit the gas...

I was told to check it manually from the block,,, and plan on doing so but due to my work schedule can not really do it until next week sometime...

I was wondering around pepboys over the weekend a decided to try something

I purchased a bottle of RISLONE RING SEAL ( small balck bottle)

After initially starting the car to go to work last night the oil pressure went up to @ 35 and stayed there ( never has gone that high ).. after driving for about 10 minutes ( light stop n go ) the pressure slowly settled down a little above 20....

Usually by the time i get to work (a few lights before and when i try to park) the oil pressure will drop when engine is at idle.( as noted above )

WELL IT DID NOT DROP THIS TIME JUST SATYED A BIT ABOVE 20 THE WHOLE TIME...

My question is what could this stuff have done to keep the pressure up ?

I also belive my problem lies in once the engine gets to a certain temp thats when the pressure drops so that could be causing this .. I have looked for odd leaks and stuff... ( there is a little oil around valve gasket) but the lvl never fluctautes betwen oil changes

I purchased the gauge to test and still plan on doing that this weekend but i thought i read somewhere here ( did a search but did not find anything )about the engine getting to temp and oil pressure droppping ( something between the pump and the pan ) ?

Thanks
David

Hi David

Was wondering how you were doing with the oil pressure thing.

Was the rislone stuff thick?? If it was it just increased the viscosity index so the oil doesn't thin out so much when it gets hot. Similar to STP.

http://www.rislone.com/ringseal.htm

all multiviscosity oils have some type of this additive in it to change the viscosity response to temperature change.

It's a quick temporary fix for an engine.

thanks for the repaly was going to message you but didn't want to seem like a pian :)

Yeah i understand that fact .. It was pretty thick but a relatively small bottle ?

Does this mean if i change my oil with 20/50 or some thing i wont have the problem... ? I change the oil pretty regularly every 3000 since i have had the truck the past yr...since the problem started it does it after an oil change. as well..

Are the rings / internal parts worn ?

I did just realize / remember something the issue started when i was in heavy stopn n go traffic driving for @ 2 hrs on a hot day @ 2 mnths ago

any thoughts ?

The Ringseal/STP type stuff does thicken the oil and a 20w50 oil will accomplish much the same thing.

hard to speculate on the condition of the rings without a dry and a wet compression test.

You said that oil consumption was not a concern so I think they are normal for the miles.

One question though-- Have you changed your oil since the problem began?? What viscosity?? what brand??

JD

ps Its no pain!!

yes i had it done at pepboys ( higher mileage vehicle )i could not tell you viscosity or brand unfortunitly but probaably 10-30 -- makes me go hmmm

pressure did not drop again today
