I took my 2001 tacoma to get it smogged and it failed. MY check engine light is on and when it is scanned it says catalyst system. I find it hard to believe that I need two $1000 dollar catalytic converters on a 2001 tacoma. That would be some expensive troubleshooting!! I do have 150,000 miles on it, but do catalyst systems just go bad like that?? I dont know what to do I dont trust any of these rip off dealers in las vegas, they'll throw $2000 in parts at it the light will still come on and theyll say well you needed it anyway. Suggestions please???

Check the HO2 sensor after the cat.converters.

I also have a 2001 tacoma that didn't pass smog. I took it to the dealership, and they replaced both cats and all of my sensors for free. Said there was a factory defect.
