auto to manual trans swap

91 metro wagon? (longer than usual with big hatch compartment)
has auto that slips, I want to turn it into a manual, preferably
5 speed.

Can this be done by simple swap and bolt in, or are the bodies
just not compatible?

Which year range trans and shifters, pedals, lines, etc. would
work. I've done things like this before, I'm wondering if it
would just be a bolt on.

Thanks in advance.

Well, it's not exactly bolt on, but if you know what you're doing, it's no big deal. You'll need...
Clutch cable

flywheel and clutch
any 89-2000 metro/suzuki swift/sprint/firefly tranny
shift linkage
89-91 pedal set
89-94 manual transmission mount(drivers side mount)
and may need the rear engine/tranny mount. Not sure about that one

The computer will work fine without the auto trans, but may give you a constant check engine light. You'll need to drill a hole in the firewall(where the stock clutch cable goes, you'll see the indentations) for the clutch cable goes through. Install the new manual peadal set, take out the old tranny and shift cable. Install the new trans and motor mount, hook up the shift linkage, tuck the wires from the auto trans away. You might not be able to hook your reverse light switch up without switching the plug on the wiring harness to the manual trans one.

It's pretty straight forward, and well worth it. The auto trannies suck the life out of these cars.

Thanks so much, an absolutely amazing reply, so then any 89 to 2000
manual trans will work, as well as will the shift linkage? And any manual flywheel and clutch 89 2000?

Then my best be would be to attack an 89 to 91 car, but if I was hurting for the trans, I could get just any one..?

That being, these things are pretty versatile.

Geozukigti said it well. I'd like to add that the ignition switch is different on the automatic as it has to be in park ,which pulls on a cable, to be able to get the key into the off position. This needs to be disabled so that the part in the switch that locks it out has to be taken apart or jerryrigged to be in the park position. Also the shift light doesn't come on (at least mine didn't) unless you change the computer and front wiring harness.

Doesn't that switch get replaced with one on the clutch pedal? I seem to recall my old 5-speed not starting if the clutch isn't pushed in.

Atoge, if you do this, I'd like to know your results and how much trouble it was. I'd LOVE to take my slushbox and toss it over the edge of the cliff at my backyard.

The switch on the clutch pedal should already be on the donor set of pedals that you use and it plugs into the harness under the dash. The ignition switch has a spring loaded aparatus that has to be pulled to the open position to be able to turn the key so you need to either disable this or put an ignition switch out of a 5 spd car in it . I did this to my 92 about two weeks ago and it sure is nice to get away from that automatic and get some better gas mileage. Ken.
