I Am looking to swap an engine into my 89' mazda 626, however i do have several concerns.

1. What is the most common engine that people swap to?

2. I want to know what engine has the greatest aftermarket following, that way I can pump it up once i put it in.

3. When swapping, what concerns should i have custom fabricating engine mounts that bolt into a unibody. Are there engine bay wall strength concerns?

4. I'm new at this so don't flame me, but can you turbocharge a vtec engine?

Thank you very much

I have a 91 626 with a 2.2 non turbo, manual trans. I reacently got my hands on a 88 626 2.2 turbo with manual trans. the car itself had been hit hard in the right front corner so it is totaled. I drove it to my house and was very suprised at how much more power and snap it has. After some resurch I found that the engine harness in the 88 and the 91 were the same. The fuel pump is the same. The only difference was the computer. The trans is built stronger in the turbo. It comes with stronger axles as well. You don't have to use the trans or axles but they are definatly stronger from a turbo. In short if you can find a turbo 2.2 mazda or probe, In all my resurch I found that it is a straight swap, A major horse power increase, and defently a great lot of fun. If you are into major modifications then the v-tec engine is a good choice. Never done it but could be interesting.......... good luck

P.S. I have a 88 mazda 626 hatch back parts car if anyone needs parts. You can send me an e-mail for more info. I'm on the Oregon coast.
