I am thinking of getting a 1965 GTO as a first Muscle Car. I love the lines on the car and everyone knows about the GTO power. Would anyone here recommend that i get a different car? I have heard that maintenance on Pontiacs can be a little expensive.

have you ever heard the old sying of what GTO stands for, Gas, Tires, and Oil that's all you need, cause you just can't seem to kill those cars, they are fantastic, i'd love to get my hands on a 70-72 GTO and if i could find the judge i'd die and prices on pontiac parts aren't really no more expersive then any other antique car, you just have to know where to look, you can find alot of the parts on the internet and also you can find OEM parts in junk yards that have little to no damage to them

my dad has a 1965 Pontiac GTO...its sweet...tripple black with the 389 Tri-Power(if you dont know that has the three two-barrel carbs) and it has a 2 speed powerglide automatic...and to tell you the truth that motor is basically bullet proof.. your best move would be to get a GTO. check out a few pictures i got of it at http://www.themusclecar.com/images/GTO/

Matt, the transmission in a '65 GTO is a 2-speed, but it's not a PowerGlide. PowerGlise is for Chevy-pattern. The Pontiac (and Olds and Buick) used the Super Turbine 300. While it shares the same shift pattern as PG, that's where the resemblance ends. It's not a good performance transmission. The vasst majority of TriPower GTOs were 4-speed cars. Good runners, too! 360 HP, low 13s with 7.00-14 bias ply tires... A nice pair of slicks and 4.33 gears, 12s!

A 65 Goat would be a great musclecar.

Musclecar, it's okay. I get challenged a lot, but seldom successfully. Don't take that the way it may sound. I do this stuff for a living, and have for over 20 years. If I say something, and don't qualify it as an "opinion", you can take it to the bank! If it's judgement call, I'll qualify it as such. I don't claim to know everyting, as onmly a fool would, but I DO know more than the average bear, and I share information to help stem the tide of myth and superstition that creeps in to all hobbies, especially when the objects of the hobby (muscle cars, in this case) get older than the people joining the hobby. This isn't "ego based". I just like to share.
For the record, I'm an ASE MAster Machinist, am aknowledged by The Commonwealth of Virginia as a legal expert regarding general automotive issues, I own and operate a custom engine shop, and contribute to technical writings concerning engines and old cars.
