Grinding sound...HELP!

Hi there...
I'm having a spot of trouble... I get this grinding noise from somewhere under the truck, not sure where. Here's the weird part. I've noticed that it occurs just as the tachometer reaches around 1300!?!?! It doesn't matter if I've just taken off from a dead stop, or if I slow down and then speed up again. Either way it's there. Sometimes not as pronounced. It does however, seem to be getting a little worse each week. I don't believe it occurs at any other speed either, although when I'm on the highway the road noise is quite deafening (has been since I bought it, figured WJ's are notorious for that). Any ideas before it sh*** the bed?

Check the fluid level in your transfer case. I'm going through this problem right now. jack up the front of the vehicle and sping the front tire so that the front axle turns. you'll be able to hear it.

:uhoh:

I have the JGC with the infamous quadratrac option.(hate it). So I will probably have to have the truck in neutral in order to spin the front tire. Do you think that this will make a difference? I replaced the fluid in the T-Case about a month ago when I noticed the sound getting worse. I used the Mopar recommended lube in it. Didn't help any. I don't know if the sound is emanating from the front axle or from the T-Case or from a differential (front OR rear), so I was hoping that someone else may have experienced the same thing and had an idea of what it could be. Any ideas will be helpful. If you find anything yourself please let me know what you find. Money is tight right now so I don't want to pull everything apart unless I have a better idea!! Thank you for replying, please let me know about the front wheel test, will I get the same result w/ t-case disengaged.....?

I am having the same exact problem,,when you make sharp turns sounds like the whole front end is about to grind off..I also noticed that the front brakes are vibrate when you stop at high speeds. replaced the rotors and pads no change..I am going to look into removing that front axle and just running standard rear wheel drive..

Hey Daco!

wanted to let you know that I changed my front rotors w/ Wearever rotors, and changed the pads to ceramic. The ceramic pads make a big difference in the dusting and rotor wear. I imagine they will last quite a bit longer, and my wheels aren't covered with that brown grime anymore. I know this doesn't have anything to do with the problems I am experiencing, just wanted to let you know that there are better pads out there than original equipment. Let me know what happens with the rear wheel drive deal. I live in New England and the winters can be pretty rough, so I'm really not willing to give up the 4x4, but I am curious to find out if the problem is eraditcated. Thanx!!

Hi guy's....I have a 1998 Grand Cherokee Larado
full time quad trac, and experiencing the same grinding sound which appears to be coming from the left front wheel area. So far I've repalced brakes, reversed the bearing hub to passenger side and vice versa, that eliminated the bearing being shot. I remove, cleaned, repacked to both CV joints and replaced boots. Guess what, the grinding is still there.. Have any of you found the cause and fix for this problem...

Thx.......CDL

you guys mean quadradrive, right.those axles need friction modifier or what some people call posi additive in the fluid or else they make some noise on turns

only the 2000 and up grand cherokees need the special fluid. 99 and below have conventional diffs in the front and rear (unless you have limited slip in the rear) i have a 97 that i have ragged the hell out of, never heard the grinding. some trouble shooting tips;
what happened when the noise started?
has it gradually gotten worse?
can you remove the front/rear drive shaft and eliminate the noise
worse under accel or decel?
brakes contribute?
same in 4 hi and lo
turning make a difference.
happens in reverse?
is the noise at a set frequency? i.e one noise per revolution of the wheel or 4 noises per revolution of the wheel which would indicate nothing past the ring gear of the diff.

Any jeeps with Quadra Drive need the additive. that that's 1999+.
