transmission whinning

I have a 2000 Venture with a whinning transmission. It only whines in OD--if shifted down to 3rd it will stop whinning. Also noticed that if I let off the gas, while in OD, you can hear the whinning slow down and disappear. Shifting seems to be fine and has not been very rough (occasionally).

Any ideas???

Thanks

Do you ever get a check engine light with this?

How long has it done this? If its been since you've owned it, It might be OK. My cavalier has had a Trans whine for 80K, and the car now has 170K with no problems. I was able to reduce the noise by using an addative. I used trans medic, a green EP addative. However, I would recomend a better one from Mr Moly.

There is a severe problem with thrust bearings some ventures, however, from the posts I've read, none ever mentioned a whine, so I would guess that your noise is different (probably the planitary gears), but I can't know for sure.

If the fluid level is correct, and it works good otherwise, I would just drive it. Personally I also recommend getting the trans fluid changed, although some people threaten instant transmission failure if you do so. My experience has been trans changes help improve life.

No just started to whine--a little rough intermittant shifting but nothing strange.

The whine just started the last 5000 miles (98000). The fluid and filter had been changed around 50K.

Thanks for the responses--I might just drive it until failure

Our 2000 Venture is doing this. We bought it at 27000 miles and now have 47000 and it, on occasion whines and shifts hard and irregularly. Otherwise...runs smoothly...any ideas? Thanks!

That sounds EXACTLY like what my van did. After I replaced the mass airflow sensor, it stopped doing it entirely. I would check for stored codes for the MAF sensor, though. I had MAF codes and tranny codes, but apparently the faulty MAF sensor caused the tranny codes.

This happens to my 2000 Venture also. I have found a work around for this problem. I simply pull off the road. Shut the engine off. Wait 15 seconds. Restart and most of the time all is back to normal. Rarely do I have to do it twice. I have just about narrow down what causes it. I believe I shift from Park, Rev, N, Drive too quickly after starting the van. If I pause on each segment, it seems not to do it. My van has 68,000 miles and this whinning/shift jerking happens once a week. Someone told me the onboard computer adjusts the transmission fluid pressure. I guess it has elevated the pressure to high. Stop and restart car.

Same as mine. If I stopped the van, shut off the engine and restarted, it would be fine for a while longer.

Hi,
I have a Venture 2000 with 95,000 miles.
I wonder if you could share your expertise on whinning sound from transmission area.

My transmission also started doing this recently.
The problem appeares to be speed and acceleration related.
I can hear the noise only above 50 mph, when I push accelerator pedal. If I release the accelerator, the noise dissapears.
Could you tell me guys how long it can last before the tranny breaks down?
Greg
