Cruise failure

Has anyone had a problem with their cruise control just shutting off while on the highway? It's happened about 4-5 times to me intermittently. I just shut it off and start it again and it's OK.

my cruise control doesnt themajority of the time. If it does then its a miracle. I did notice that when it does work it will shut off within 5 secconds. Curious to know what i need to do to fix it? hopefully not too expensive :banghead:

does it just shut off, or are you turning your wipers on or off when it shuts off? mine will sometimes shut off if i'm fiddling with the wipers. it's a tsb i do believe.

no it shuts off by itself without touching the wipers. I can be cruising down the highway and set the cruise (when it does work), put my hands on the steering wheel and within 5 seconds it shuts off. Then i can reset it but it will shut off again in 5 secs. its a pisser

I have a 91 grand prix gt, my mechanic told me that thier is a cruise control switch down by your brake pedal. mine had to be replaced.when you hit your brakes it kicks off your cruise control, that switch might be bad Don

mine will sometimes shut off if i'm using the button to increase speed...but it only does it if i'm bumping it up to 70-72 or so...after i get past that speed it don't seem to be a problem.

Tonyr, year, engine and mileage. I have a 97 GP SE and have no problems with the cruse control like you are having. Mine will even work at 30 mph also, which it should not do that.

We have a 2001 Grand Prix SE, our cruise will work fine on a level highway or while going up a hill but it will shut off when it starts down a hill (any time the throttle returns to the idle position), if I maintain just a slight amount of pressure on the gas pedal it will work fine. I replace the module yesterday & it still does the same thing, any ideas.

I don't think your car has a problem as that's the way the cruise control is designed to work.

It's supposed to maintain a constant speed. When you're driving on flat surface will give the pedal a slight push one at a time until the speed is reached.

When going uphill it will open the throttle a little more (as it needs a bigger effort to maintain speed) and that normally causes a lower fuel economy.

Finally when going downhill the car tends to increase the speed on it's own because of gravity; that's why the cruise control releases the throttle and turns off.

I would check the brake pedal switch....could be just out of adjustment...

I had a similar problem on my 2002 GP. After a little research, I was led to the multifunction switch on the steering column. This is a combo with the turn signal, wipers, and hazard lights. Turns out that if the hazard light contacts are bad, the cruise control will not work. The multifunction switch is very expensive. All I had to do was push on the hazard light button a couple of times and "bingo" the cruise started working again. I have also read that the 3rd brake light (center) can keep cruise from working (not my experience though)
