1994 grand cherokee when making tight turns as in parking lots or backing out of tight spots, knock knock knocks until wheels are straightened and only while in motion could this be u-joints, by the way this jeep is all time 4-wheel drive

It could possibly be the sway bar...I had my bolts break off the sway bar and it knocks when I make tight turns now.

Did you find out problem? I have similar problem and only makes knocking sound in tight turns. I have been told u-joint but have received other thoughts. I don't want to start replacing all parts .

Suggestion. Maybe check your wheel bearings. I just had the same problem when backing up and a growling while turning at slow speeds. It turned out to be a shot wheel bearing in the right (Passenger side) rear. I have a Dana 35C rearend pretty easy to fix on your own. Just prepare to get messy. I hope this helps and good luck.

I had wheel bearings checked out. They were good. Any other suggestions? I have talked to a few people and have had suggestions from u-joint, front axels, transfer case and so on. Alot of ideas but no certainity.

if your lucky, I noticed on my 93 that it would do the same thing. So I replaced the ujoints but When i did that, on the front drive shaft I saw in the Double cardian cv joint that there is a small spring in it, that my friends is what's cause my knocking sound, seems when I go to take slow turns, it catches on something and starts knocking away, havent replaced it yet but I figured out what it was at least. hope this helps

Curious about this. I just bought a 95 JGC Laredo and when this first happened to me, I was making a sharp right turn into a parking lot. It SOUNDED like the rear passenger brake had locked up. It "clunked" about 5 times, then was okay. When I started it again and started backing out of the parking space, it did it again on the back and then it sounded like it was coming from the front passenger side.

I thought it was the brakes and took it back to the dealership. They supposedly checked the brakes and rotors and said everything looked fine.

It did it again briefly yesterday. Both days that this happened, it was raining.

So I'm wondering if it matters whether you're turning left or right and if it's something that you've just noticed when it's raining. I haven't had a problem today (tried to recreate the one situation with the tight turn) and it didn't happen. But then again, it's not raining! And mine "clunked" even when the wheels were straight....

My sound comes after the jeep has run awhile and warmed up all fluids. The noise sounds like the axel is hitting the bottom under rear seat. Happens in rain and dry weather.

Interesting....must be something different, though, because what I heard was definitely "outside" and not "under" the Jeep....

The thumping in sharp turns is most likely caused by a bad transfer case if it is the Quadratrac NP249J Transfer Case (Full time 4WD)

CV joints sound like the most likely culprit. Although the front differential could have something to do with it too.
