I was just doing a search for some new rims and every set that i've seen, i've been able to find a knock off that looks exactly like them. i don't see the point in paying hundreds more just for a name. i was looking at the racing hart m6 3 piece $2199, but i saw the Katana K-6 for $999. both with tires and look the same. can anyone tell me the difference? are the knock offs much heavier or not as well constructed, does it matter? please help. thanks
Johnnie

Usually it's a bit of both, or all of the first. For instance, you can get Racing Hart CP-035 rims which are forged and very light for their sizing (though still adequately strong), or you can get the knock-offs (forget who makes them) which are sand cast and weigh much more. Believe it or not, most of the price that goes into making the rim actually goes into making it and not into the name on it, which is why the premiere wheels are still the best in terms of price vs. quality.

I have the katana knock offs of the racing hart c-5. and the only problem i've had with them is that they are heavy as hell! do you think it's worth the extra thousand to get the real thing? i mean i get what you're saying about the quality, but i have had no problems, exept the damn weight!! but a g for weight, i think i might have to deal with it, cause i don't know how much lighter they would even be. thanks for the help texan and anyone else!

It all depends on what you are after... cheap looks or the real deal. If you are concerned with performance, you'll have to be very concerned about weight. Additional weight is one of those universally bad things in terms of cars, it hurts every aspect of performance AND fuel economy. In the end, find out how much a difference in weight there is and make up your own mind about what's more important; the money in your wallet or the weight off your car.

My wheels are knock-offs to some other rim.

As a matter of fact there are 8 or so wheels identical to the ones I have.
