Fan works on high only ..defrost dead

Hi..my first post here, though Im certainly not new to message boards.
I have a 98 grand prix , ton of miles on it Im afraid since my husband drives it 100 miles a day to work, so things are starting to break down often it seems.

Recently the ac quit working and the rear defrost at the same time.
If you turn the fan on it will only work on the highest setting which is 5, if you try any other it does nothing. When it is turned on 5, it blows air but not cold air.

Anybody have any experience with this, or know what might be the problem?

IT could be bad blower resister located on right side battom of the heater duct or bad ignition switch

i would also say the blower motor resistor. A $25 part.

Blower motor resistor. A pain to replace but is not that expensive to get.

This must be a common problem. My 99 GP lost fan levels 1 and 2 several months ago. My nephew, a former serviceman at Pontiac dealer, told me right away it is the resistor.

I was glad to find replies to this and similar posts so I now know where it is to replace it.

not sure of the part number, but there are several different ones out. Some numbers superseed the others.

Hi you seem really helpful. I just returned back from Iraq and came back to the same problem as most GP owners have been having with their ac units. My AC was only blowing on a 5 setting then one day just stopped. When I turn the fan switch you hear the compressor kick on but no air what so ever. A new switch would cost $150 but as we all know a nice junkyard comes in handy...BUT... if it is just the resistor, then that seems like the easy and more affordable choice.... What do you suggest? Also do you have any guidance on installing the resistor and where I would pick one up? Pontiac dealership? Thank you very much for your time.

It is either the resistor module or ignition switch. BIG-L explains and instructs how to repair at the following forum link.

Would Any Body Think That If The Ignition Switch Went Bad Or A Bad Blower Resistor
Could That Cause Rear Speakers Not To Work. "SPEAKERS WORK
SOMETIMES BUT MORE TIMES NOT!!

Nope, neither of those have anything to do with the speakers.
