What causes an original factory clear coat to peel?
Have the same question, The clear coat is peeling off my 97 tiburon's
rear spoiler. Do you know if this can reapplied easily or do you really
need an expert do it.

Most common problem with clear coat peeling is lack of proper adhesion. If a manufacturer doesnt top coat then while the paint is fairly fresh put the clear coat on. If they wait too long to put the clear coat on it doesnt adhere properly and wont be noticable till a couple years(sooner is possable too) the changes in temperature and humidity and UV's from the sun create the flaw to seperate and weaken. If caught early enough a pro polishing guy can heat up the clear coat and paint it helps it adhere better and last longer. Can be fixed in the right hands. But thats a good example of poor workmanship (what do expect from a machine) cars are painted in a assembly process by robot painters , if they wait too long between coats it can seperate at a later date. Thats why in the old days they sanded alot to promote adhesion , new paint they use is designed to fuse together coat by coat before it cures so if they paint over cured paint it will seperate. Hope that helps , more to it than i described as well.

proper clear coat lasts without wax for many many years without needing wax. Pretty much depends what kind of environment you live in. Wax on clear coat isnt the best way to maintain it anyways , sealant and conditioners is. The sealant I use sinks right down into the base coat but if there is future damages on it , it must be removed to be repaired then put back on. With waxing this is simpler cus your layering wax and just hiding stuff making it slightly tougher to see. Sealants for waxes are available too , they help by making you have to wax less often to maintain the shine. If you dont seal it it just wears off in other words.

w/o a wax a paint sealant is only half way completed...u still need to use wax if u use a conditioner or not

Ok ill make this simple , if you wax seal it with a sealant from the same company that you use the wax from , this way theres no complications or poor chemical reactions , if you use compounds and conditioners they should be along the same line up of products as well. Example Mcguires waxes should be toped off with mcguires sealant. Mothers use only mothers products , look on there websites for a polishing system they have setup , it will be in steps always finished with a sealant im sure.
Koeb is right , seal your paint every time you wax or compound. But use whats suggested in the steps they suggest.

Will doing a wax/sealant combo fix small dime-quarter sized spots on the hood where the clear coat came off for some reason? Or is there a way to patch it with another layer of clear coat. I'm looking to do it on the cheep even if it does not come out perfect.

the wax n seal will not replace nething, they may hide small insignifagent scratches...but the best cheap thing u can do is gettin a highspeed buffer n a very exotic cut n buff it, u may b able to burn some clear coat over ur gap but im not sure n hit it w/extreme care

No wax or sealant will replace missing clear coat, time for some paint work.

If you are not exp. with a high speed buffer I highly recommend you do not attemp on your vehicle. As you could do more damage than good.

If the clear coat is comming off and this car is fairly new theres gotta be an impact that started it or an adhesion problem between the clear coat and base coat. There was a polishing method that could spread out the clear and thin it over with heat. Very easy to burn spots this way unless your skilled at floating the paint. When you float paint it is boiling hot and even the slightest touch will peel it right off the primer , this method cannot be used on painted plastic bumpers or trim. Not many people can float paint and most who know how wont even bother since the sucess rate is low.

So what should I do? The 2-3 little dime and smaller sized spots where the clear coat came off ruin my hood! I don;t have too much cash so anythign over $150 is out of hte question.

Shop around for the best deal , perhaps MACO could come in handy here , they can match the color and its hard to screw up a hood. See what maco or any other body shop says and let me know what the request for charges.

I don't have too much time during work hours so it may be a while.... stupid tiny thigs ruining my hood... and then theres the problem of my right side skirt being busted at the wheel well :swear: , and I hate the stupid aftermarket skirts that the dude gave me when i bought the car.
