Starter problem. Where is it?

Hello Group,
I have a '94 g20 with automatic transmission.
I believed I had a starter problem in that it would not start
or try to turn the engine. No spinning sound.
I have read the many letters about the starter from this group.

I wonder if I may be a problem with my shifter. I have trouble going into park unless I push forward hard on the shifter. I can't
get out of park unless I turn the key first. I can't remember if
that is the way it is supposed to be.

When I banged on
what I thought was the start, I could start the car several times.
Eventually this didn't work and I banged and banged and
could not start the car. A friend came by and turned the
key while I banged and it worked. We then drove it to the mechanic
(a large canadian chain) and asked for the starter to be replaced.
I got it back and the car worked a few times and again it
won't start. I looked under the hood at what I thought was the
starter saw that it was the same one as before. I don't see any new
stuff (when looking from above).

So where is the starter? I can't imagine they didn't change it and assume I have banging on the wrong thing.
I thought it was between the firewall and the transmission
near the bottom of the car. So I could see it from above. I would
bang it with a wrench by reaching in from above.
There is a single wire connected to it from above.
The starter cost $260. Would they have installed it in the old
cast casing.
Thanks,

Jan

the starter on that vehicle is directly under the air intake
plenum. You can see it from the top, but it is pretty hard. I have personally been able to tap on them from the top, but again, it is a little difficult. And no, people don't tend to put old casing on new starter parts. It is usually replaced completely.

What does it say on the bill ....... Repair starter motor or Replace starter motor ? ........ Take it back to them because either way they havent fixed it ...... Be politr but firm :)
