Have a 93 Camry and the cooling fan turns very slow. It does turn but not very fast and is causing the engine to overheat at times. Any ideas on what could be the cause? I had just gone to the auto parts store to get a new thermostat and the guy behind the counter said he thought it was due to a bad battery. This doesn't sound right since the alternator provides most of the juice. Could the guy be right?

Sounds like bad fan motor...

Try TAP Recycling for a replacement fan. I got one from them for my 89, it was like $30 shipped. Or you can try a salvage yard.

disconnect primary cooling fan power connector and apply 12v with current meter. should be 5.8 to 7.4 amps. good starting place.

Yes, bad fan motor is most likely. Relay is easy to test.

chuey11 - can you monitor current in the fuse-box wire from the battery and see the difference in current flow when the motor is on and off? Should still be 5.8 to 7.4. If it is correct current at the primary cooling fan connector when 12 v is applied and less when tested at the battery power wire - should be indicator of bad relay. ???

I know you can test the relay separately, but this procedure (if it worked) would test the relay as well as the relay contacts in place.
