High-pitched whurr - ABS motor?

Hi gang, cheezwizard speaking.

Yeah, I've had my '99 3.5l GX just for several hundred miles and like it lots.

Every now and then, when I come to a stop and have my window open, I'll hear a high pitched whurring sound that lasts a couple seconds. Sounds like it's coming from the front on the driver's side. It kinda whurrs up then stops.

I thought it must be the ABS system motor? Is that a normal thing?

I would guess air pump. Part of the emmissions system components I think. I usually hear it just after start and sometimes at a stoplight. FWIW, I think the ABS is typically silent, except during operation when you hear the valves cycling and feel it under foot.

I have no idea what it is, but it is normal. I have heard it on two other Intrigues. It typically goes on mine when the engine is hot and idling.

It is the air injection pump and no this is not normal. Have you had your head lights flicker yet , This is a sign of the air pump drawing extream amps.
What will happen the air pump will seize up and the 50 amp fuse will blow, the ses light will come on and set a p410 error. The pump cost is 163.00 dealer only. Good luck hope this helps.

Jeepers, I hope you're wrong intrigue2001. I just got my '99 3.5 with 86k on it, figured that sorta problem would've been taken care of already. I haven't had flickering headlights at all.

The AIR pump cycling is normal within the first few minutes after start up as it helps light of the CAT. If you hear it when the engine is hot and idling then it should not be the AIR pump.

GM has had trouble with blown fuses and codes on AIR pumps going back at least to the 93-97 F-Body platform.

As this is part of the emissions control system, I thought that GM had to cover this for 10/100,000, no?

On my car, the dimming headlights is more common during winter, perhaps it is because you do more driving at night during winter or perhaps it is due to the cooler temps taking the CAT longer to warm up to operating temp.
