1996 geo metro ignition problem

I have a 1996 geo metro that I have been working on for the last couple days.
The problem that I have been running into is the ignition fuse keeps blowing the instant that the key is turned.

This kills the power to the fuel pump as well as the power to the ECM. (killing all the idiot lights)
The engine still cranks over and all the accessories still work.

I have tried disconnecting the fuel pump wires as well as the ECM and the ignition module to try and narrow down the problem but the fuse still blows about 2 seconds after I turn the key.

Any ideas on what would cause this to happen and what I can do to fix it?

are you sure you are not using the incorrect size\type of fuse? the fusyou are speaking of is very sensitive and there are many wires that if were grounding out somewhere would blow it instantly. check the wiring harness for wear.

The FI fuse under the hood you mean? 15a? Common short in the wiring harness that goes through the firewall. Try re-postitioning the wirings harness(turning it where it goes through the firewall)

It was the fuse under the dash labeled ignition that was blowing.
However the problem has been resolved, it was indeed a short in the wiring harness going through the firewall.
Nearly half the wires going through the firewall had the sheathing worn through causing several to arc and short against the firewall and each other.

Thanks for the headsup on where to look for the solution to the problem.

I want to thank you for the heads up on the 15 amp Ignition Fuse.
Replaced it and now my daughter is happy:smile:
