my 98 GTP is making major poping and clunking noises when i turn left or right and it comes from both sides, this noise is been bothering me for a while. I changed the cv joints and the front struts because they were bad but that didn't do any thing. the mechanic had no clue where the noise is coming from. Please if anyone knows about this being a problem with other GP's let me know . another mechanic told me its the wheel bearings but i want to make sure before i drop all that money on it.
thanks

Maybe the rack and pinion...I believe the recall was also on the '98 models. If yours hasn't had the rack and pinion fixed because of the recall, that could be it, or it could be the wheel bearings. I just had to replace one of those on my car. $595 for parts and labor.

I thought the wheel bearing makes more like a humming or howling noise and not a poping cracking metal kinda noice cuz thats what i'm hearing thanks for replying and nice pics by the way....i'm posting some up soon

Yeah, my wheel bearing was a metallic whirring noise. But on my '97, my steering used to pop like something was hitting something else when I was turning...it only did it to the right, then I had the rack & pinion replaced, and it stopped.

I agree with GTPgirl,id go to your local Pontiac dealer and see if you Vin is included in the recall for the rack.......~Larry~

I have a '99 GT and it had some clunking noises in the front end too. I could really hear it when turning left or right at slow speeds such as in a parking lot. Anyways, I took it to the dealer and they managed to fix it after I rode around with a tech in the passenger seat. I believe my service write-up said something about re-torquing the the bolts on the front subframe. Either way, something large was loose and not torqued down properly. Hope this helps though it sounds kinda vague. If I can find the service write-up I'll post their findings.

You don't have to go to a dealership to find out if it's included, you should be able to find the recall information at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/recallsearch.cfm

My brother once on his nissan had the same problem coming from the shop. It was that the rack was loose, the mechanic loosen it a little to tight something else and forgot to tight it back. And my dad 98 Lumina was on the recall and the only problem he had was sometimes when turning to the left the steering wheel stucked, no noise, no nothing. Do you have similar problems?
