When to shift?Raz_Kaz 05-26-2004, 11:22 AM Since this is my friends first 5-speed car, he's pretty new to shifting and all that. What is the appropriate shiftpoint so that he doesnt loose boost pressure? He thinks if he lets the rpm's dip below 2500, then the turbo has to spool again. Not really too sure, but maybe someone can help. He basically wants to accelerate as fast as I can I couldnt help him out because I really don't have much knowledge on VW's at all flylwsi 05-26-2004, 12:09 PM what is it? a 1.8t? what year? if he's racing, shift at redline. end of story... Igovert500 05-26-2004, 12:20 PM WHAT? 1200? ARE you kidding? The turbo wont even spool that low. To answer your original question, my turbos don't spool till 2500, but that is really determined by the size of your turbo(s) and the air moving through them. If you get intake and exhaust, downpipe and other mods, the turbo will spool faster. Regardless, there are equations to figure out ideal shift points, on my car, some of them even worked out to be past redline(but you don't want to do that) so when in doubt, just take it to redline in every gear if you are trying to race. If you are trying to get good gas mileage, shift at 1500 or whatever your lowest point is. drag1320neon 05-26-2004, 12:23 PM hes a newb, dont worry about him. anyway, what you want to find out, is where the peak horsepower is, then shift past that, and find out where you can shift so that it lands right before your peak power, so theres no lag Raz_Kaz 05-26-2004, 01:06 PM what is it? a 1.8t? what year? if he's racing, shift at redline. end of story... 2001 VW jetta 1.8t....and yea it's for racing purposes flylwsi 05-26-2004, 01:18 PM what's the redline? shift there... Raz_Kaz 05-26-2004, 01:22 PM what's the redline? shift there... redlines about 5700rpm which is what I told him, but he said it's a VW and you dont know shit about them....which I don't so I was doubting my own knowledge  flylwsi 05-26-2004, 01:27 PM it's a car. he doesn't know shit about it, obviously... why would you shift at anything but a very high rpm (or redline) when racing... anyone is going to tell you that you want to shift at the power peak (or at redline, to keep the revs above X rpm when they drop down for the next gear) running to redline ensures that the revs will be above his spooling RPM's... IE. shift at 5k, it'll drop to 2k (this is theoretical) shift at 5700, it'll drop to almost 3k see what i mean? mynismo 05-26-2004, 01:35 PM i shift at 7.5k :P flylwsi 05-26-2004, 01:40 PM and you don't drive a 1.8t vw... ;) Raz_Kaz 05-26-2004, 01:44 PM lol, thanks for tha info guys.... flylwsi 05-26-2004, 01:50 PM fer shizzle. if your dude is confused, tell him to come here and we'll set him straight. or go to the vw forum, or www.vwvortex.com, or www.ohiovw.com very insightful people mynismo 05-26-2004, 01:56 PM and you don't drive a 1.8t vw... ;) shhhhhhhhh  flylwsi 05-26-2004, 01:58 PM what was that? your blow off? or the sound of a 1.8t exploding at 7.5k? ;) mynismo 05-26-2004, 02:16 PM well, my bov is a lil louder than a shhhhh. so yes, its his engine blowing up  landyacht 05-26-2004, 03:12 PM well, my bov is a lil louder than a shhhhh. so yes, its his engine blowing up LOL, you guys are great. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
