venting a stock BOV97GSTspyder 05-21-2004, 02:37 AM all right...my friend got a new engine for his GSX...a 4G63 of course...and it came with a stock BOV. but for some reason this one is a lot bigger than my stock BOV. anyway he gave it to me so i got the idea to try and vent it to the atmosphere....put it this way... you can easily hear me coming from a block or two away. this sucker is LOUD. the only downfall is that my car loves to stall now :( i know it's probably because it leaks...and it's a huge pain in the ass coming to a stop because i have to heel-toe it to keep the engine alive...but is there any possible way to stop the leak? or to make it not leak as much? thanks for any help. spyderturbo007 05-21-2004, 08:34 AM My understanding is that you need some type of fuel management to compensate for the lost air that is normally recirculated back into the intake. I think some guys do it with a SAFC and others with DSMlink. LandoAWD 05-21-2004, 09:35 AM Put your recirc hose back on. That will solve your problem...that and reading the bazillion other threads on this. Tomeek 05-21-2004, 10:17 AM or just get a better BoV, one that doesnt leak :D LandoAWD 05-21-2004, 10:24 AM or just get a better BoV, one that doesnt leak :D The type of BOV you run will not change how the MAS counts air. Tomeek 05-21-2004, 11:09 AM but if it is a better bov you wont stal... also depending on the car LandoAWD 05-21-2004, 11:13 AM The idea here is to encourage people to do things properly and in a fashion that will benefit their car. Spreading one of the DSM communities biggest falacies is not part of the agenda. I do agree that there are cars out there that will do fine venting, but those cars are freaks, plain and simple. -The MAS takes a count of air. Fact. -Blowing off to the atmosphere releases metered air. Fact -This causes a rich condition. Fact. LandoAWD 05-21-2004, 11:14 AM I will not persue this issue furthur. Listen or don't, I care less by the day. scottsee 05-21-2004, 11:57 AM wow, im a little supprised on how people stop using the search feature on this fourm. to answer your question, your stalling becasue the vorcies that your MAF is recording and ajusting the fuel for is not accurate, all the air that is in your pipes when you shift isnt being recirculated back into your intake pipe like your ecu thinks it is causing the amount of pressure / air calculations to be inaccurate. so the ingnition timing, and fuel supply is wrong, stalling your car. sure, its nice and loud, but your going to suffer the conisquences of crappy performance. if you want to vent to the atmispere, buy a gm maf and translator, and relocate the maf onto the upper intercooler pipe, then you can vent to the atmispere. JoeWagon 05-21-2004, 06:15 PM To clarify, it's not because your BOV leaks. NO BOV WILL RUN VENTED with any different effects. Your friend isn't so bright when it comes to DSM MAF's, so trust everyone when we say put the hose back on. Change your spark plugs too, you've been running rich. Talon69 05-21-2004, 11:40 PM yes like everyone has said don't vent to atmosphere!!!! Unless you have like $1000 or more to get the FMS and other stuff to make it run right AmericanEagle 05-22-2004, 11:37 AM I think people are also getting terms confused. Factory cars come with a DV (Diverter Valve). These valves "leak" at idle. The best ones will, because they are made for a closed loop system. Under boost they will close and hold rock solid. BOV's (Blow Off Valves) Hold untill a set pressure is reached. You will get a rich condition with a BOV. But the idle problem is from car to car. I have a friend with my exact car running a HKS valve and blowing to atmo with no idle probs. JoeWagon 05-22-2004, 02:28 PM We went through this here: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=1586681&postcount=21 which didn't end up pretty. I'll continue to call my stock BOV a BOV, and all aftermarket BOV's the same. I had a 2g BOV, now I have a 1g BOV. AmericanEagle 05-22-2004, 02:50 PM Thats fine. But, there is a slight diff between the two. So, to not be misunderstood i used the two names. Talon69 05-22-2004, 06:29 PM Yeah difference between 2 is that the 2g is plastic and the 1g is metal. lol J/K But i will stick with what joe said vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
