Have a 84 Porsche 911 that doesn't have ignition firing (coil wire out at distributor) until you release ignition switch ( firing from coil wire then) there is 12 volt at coil during cranking. engine will start sometimes and run good only after releasing ignition switch. thanks for any help

It sounds like a bad ignition switch to me. The coil should have power in run & start positions.

thanks boschmann I should have give more detail, after engine reaches normal operating temp it will start when in cranking position from ignition swich

Have you put a test light on the + (15) terminal of the coil to see if there is power in the cranking position when cold?

there voltage at t 15 in both on and crank position, I just drove the car 200 miles with no problems other than the first time I started it, by turning to crank postion then releasing switch, it takes a few times but it finally starts, I also put a remote start switch on starter. leaving switch in on position and using remote to crank that didn't help thanks

I take it that says there is 12V in both positions. Do you think it could be a fuel pressure problem, particularly bleeding down pressure after it sits for a while?
