Why are DSM's considered unrelible?sykane 05-20-2004, 06:11 PM I am in the market for a new car and i want to buy a 5 speed dsm. The problem is that everyone says that dsm's are unrelible. WHat i was wondering is what are the spicific problems that make these cars unrelible?I am really interested in the cars but i want to know what i am getting into first. Also what kinda milage should i look for? Most DSM's i find have around 100,000 on them or more. Are thses still good or are they all trouble?I am mostly looking at a 1st gen eclipse or talon. Thanks JoeWagon 05-20-2004, 06:15 PM The unreliable part is that so many people run 12's on their 1g's that they tend to break more than a friend's honda in the 16's. An older car will have more problems, but on a whole I wouldn't consider a DSM any more unreliable than a Honda that could actually produce the same amount of power (doesn't happen much). Lots of 100k+ DSM's are fast too, but lower miles are always a plus. youngvr4 05-20-2004, 06:25 PM there trannies have problems once high in mileage, my talons trannie went out at 140,000 miles $1,200 would fix that, other than that its all on the owner, and that goes with any car. LandoAWD 05-20-2004, 06:47 PM :iagree: RattlesnakeGST 05-20-2004, 07:05 PM Cause most of Americans get in their car and go... then stop and turn it off.. Dont change the oil on time... Car breaks down and blame it on reliability... When its actually the owner that doesnt know how to take good care of the car.. Its not one of those..leave it alone and itll still run tomorrow cars like a honda or toyo.. Gotta take care of it. scottsee 05-20-2004, 07:07 PM becasue people dont know DICK about cars. thats why they say that. everyone thinks their cars are the greatest, and somthings wrong with every other manufacture out there. joe hit it right on the head. they break becasue we break them in the name of HP MR2Driver 05-20-2004, 07:59 PM They're only known "issues" are crankwalk, detonation and tranny issues. Crankwalk isnt as much of an issue as people make it out to be. Certain generations and years are less prone to it. The real problem is that once you up the power, things start breaking, moreso than other factory turbocharged cars... If you keep it stock, and treat it right, it should treat you just the same, reliability is a driver issue, not a car issue. xllSkylinellx 05-20-2004, 08:12 PM Unreliable huh? Dunno. In spite the fact that I have a pos eclipse rs, I've had it for a year now and I abuse the shit out of it... maintain it regularly and it runs just fine... never had any problems. Same with my friend's gs-T. Pretty gd reliable to me... heh. EVOclipse 05-20-2004, 10:19 PM i agree ive gone through 2 trannies already(in an RS so its not hp) actually the 1st one was put in crappy and thats why it broke again. other than that id say look out for the cooling system thats where most of my problems came from. transmission and cooling. likewise to all of the above its always car to car...if its well taken care of it probly wont have much to worry about...just realize ALOT of dumb ppl bought eclipses back in the day. (mine has been alot of trouble) BoostedSpyder 05-20-2004, 11:21 PM i would venture to say most of the 'unreliable' issues came from people trying to make an RS/GS act like a GST/X. also pumping a RS/GS full of weight making mods, and no power mods. you get me? pushing a car way too hard all the time. or other people that abuse the turbo models. when i was looking i found many that were lightly modded if not 100% stock. i would never buy an Eclipse from a guy like me! LOL the 4g63 is a bulletproof engine. for all of them that are out there, some are going to be problematic, but the 1000's you don't hear about that are running absolutly perfect are fine. do a search on ' just for boostedspyder ' to see a list of most of the guy's in here and their milages. to be absolutly honest i know exactly why there are these rumors... DAMN HONDUH OWNERS SABATOGING OUR REPS CUZ THEY ARE TIRED OF GETTING THEIR ASSES HANDD TO THEM!!!! so they are waging a psyche war to try to reduce our #'s. but i am on to you all!!!! xllSkylinellx 05-21-2004, 12:33 AM I abuse my Honda also... I drive that thing real hard.... and it's a pos auto.. never had any problems. I love it. Reckage 05-21-2004, 01:17 AM ok what if you totally rebuild an engine wouldnt it be a new engine then with no miles. haha RiceRocket18 05-21-2004, 01:45 AM speaking from experience, the only thing you gotta watch out for is the auto trans eclipses. their stock tranny and torque converter sucks big time. however, if you don't put any mods on them and leave it stock. they all work just fine, auto or manual. when i started putting on upgrades on my AT i started noticing laggs and laggs from the trans and TC. so a new TC upgrade is on the top of my list :). Um Duh!! everybody knows auto trannys sux ass performance wise without an upgraded tc, rule of thumb. and also any tranny wikk give you problems if you start modding your car and forget about your drivetrain common anarchy1114 05-21-2004, 12:44 PM its all on how you take care of your car. you treat ur car like shit its gunna treat you like shit , and vice-versa. my 98 gs has almost 100 k on it and i've had a few problems with the engine but for the most part its been really good to me. on the same note i mean i change ther oil and every 2000 miles and just try to keep the car maintained as well as i can. i think i've had to replace a master clutch cylinder, thermostat, plugs and wires, the valve cover gasket, and then the oil and filter like i said b4 but nothing else major have fun with whatever you get tho. in my over all opinion dsm are really reliable if you treat 'em right and still have more power than a honduh will ever dream about making. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
