Geo Metro Transmission ?

My wife's 1992 1.0L Automatic Metro died at a light the other
night. As she stop it made some noise and shuddered and died
suddenly. Every time I start it it runs great, until I shift it
into any gear and then it kind of slams to a halt immediately. My
guess was torque converter but don't know. Here is what it reminds
me of (In a Manual Transmission car: When you just let up on the
clutch fast without giving it gas.) Any help. I haven't tried to
lift the front wheels off the ground and spin the tranny yet(the
idea just came to me.) Will do that tonight. Someone else suggested that the bolt or bolts have come loose from the flywheel and jammed up the system. Also suggested was a broken flywheel.

I put it up on jack stands tonight and removed the torque converter inspection cover. I then spun the torque converter 360 degrees while inspecting the flexplate and torque converter no missing bolts or broken pieces. Will try the suggestions tomorrow. I have read that none of the Geo Metros have lockup torque converters. Does this affect the suggestion to find the solenoid you mentioned.

All torque converters lock at one point. Sounds like you have a bad speed sensor. This will cause the torque converter to not un-lock. Like throwing the car into gear without using the clutch.

Did you find out what the problem was?!! My 1992 Metro does the same thing. I figured it is the torque converter but didn't want to take the time or expense to replace without really knowing. I would appreciate any help. Thanks

92 metro doesn't have a lock up convertor. sounds like either something in tranny is dragging a lot or when you put it in gear the motor moves a little and some electrical connection is breaking. might start car and wiggle all the wires around and see if it does. i would suspect its something in the tranny but worth a try to see what it does when you move stuff
