o2 sensor has very little to do with how your geo runs. I actually ran mine without one a lot of the time. So no, it should not cause your car to die.

Do you have 10w-30 oil in it? mine started runnin terribly in the higher gears, usually going up any degree of incline. So I took it to the shop, they said they took it for 3 drives and it ran perfect, but then later they found a "service bulletin" (not sure what that is, special mechanics newsgroup or something) that said Metro engines don't like 10w-30, the valves lose their prime (that's what they said, i don't fully understand the valvetrain). So I changed to 5w-30, been running great since, zippin up hills no prob! Hope this helps!

FYI: Service bulletin is a special notation sent to dealers by a manufacturer advising them of an issue related to a vehicle's performance in the field. Issued after a shop manual is printed and is to supplement it.
