Door won't shut

I have a 2000 Grand prix and the driver side door won't close. I can take a screwdriver and move the door latch in and out without it locking. I've taken the door panel off and there is some type of lever on the bottom of the latch, if I push up on it the latch will lock. This is the only way I can get the door to stay closed.. Is the latch broke or could something be disconnected? Any ideas?

Gets pictures or drawings so we can see what the heck is going on. It is really hard to play by ear like this

That's an easy fix:

1. Duct tape the door shut (make sure the tape is on the outside).
2. Crawl through the window or use the passenger side door every time you need to get in and out of the vehicle (depending on your physical capabilities)
3. Move to Arkansas (you'll be complimented for having at least one door that works).

:naughty:

probably need a new lock/latch assembly.

Could be, but also could be just a dissengaged connecting rod. There are no means I can tell if the latch/lock is broken or just loose without seeing it.
