Damn this keyless entry......

I've got a 99 GP SE that I bought used with no remotes- found one on ebay and got programming instructions from an earlier thread on this forum.

I've tried to program it about 20 times so far to no avail. I have tried sitting in the driver seat and the passenger seat, I've checked the battery (even swapped the battery with the one in my 98 suburban AND tried that transmitter too ) and NOTHING. I'm not getting any chime after 7 seconds during programming. When I finish turning the ignition to ACC I get one chime, then two. This repeats for a while, then nothing, then I can open & close a door, then it starts again. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG????????? As far as doing the steps fast, like a "half a second between every step" how in the heck can anyone do that?

I hate Chrysler products, but I have to say I did this in about 2 minutes on my LHS using a FORD transmitter. Worked fine.

List each step you did...then we might better understand what your doing wrong...

I followed this word for word:

Perform the following steps:

Sit in the vehicle driver's seat.
Remove the ignition key from the ignition lock cylinder.
Close all of the vehicle's doors.
Remove the MALL PGM fuse from the fuse panel. Refer to Electronic Diagnosis in Body and Chassis.
Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the ACC position.
Turn the ignition lock cylinder OFF, then back to ACC within 1 second.
Open and then close any vehicle door. You will hear a chime when the remote control door lock receiver enters the programming/diagnostic mode. If you do not hear a chime, start again at step 1.

Important
After 7 seconds, you may hear a chime confirming successful synchronization. After approximately 14 seconds, you will hear a chime confirming successful programming.

Press and hold the transmitter LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for 14 seconds.
Repeat step 8 in order to program each additional transmitter.
Remove the ignition key from the ignition lock cylinder.
Install the MALL PGM fuse back into the fuse panel. Refer to Electrical Diagnosis in Body and Chassis.
Validate that all the transmitters that were programmed operate properly. Refer to Keyless Entry System Operation .

Are you sure the car has keyless entry? Are you sure you have the right remote transmitter?

Not entirely- how can I be sure? The remote I got was a 4- button with lock, unlock, panic, and trunk.

Im not sure who told you about those Directions but that is incorrect!!!

That is how you Program the Features of your system not the Remote!!!!!!

To Program the remote all you have to do is hold both buttons(lock, Unlock) for 7 seconds.

If that doesnt work you need to take it into the dealership and have the Remote matched to your car....you can have a max of 4 transmitters match to your car.

oh yeah that is per owners Manual

Those instructions do show up on the service manual, I can not imagine why it is not working, that looks like exactly the manual says it has to be done. Check on the option codes label located on the trunk and look for AU0-REMOTE ENTRY LOCK CONTROL. If your option label contains the AU0 code then your car is supposed to have remote lock system. :2cents:

(Thanks kilroypr) I checked the options codes and no AUO. Hard to beleive with as many options as this car has that it was ordered without keyless entry. :(

Anyone have experience with aftermarket systems? I get nervous cutting into the harness of something as sophisticated as these vehicles.

Actually, that is how you RESYNCHRONIZE your remote to your car- if that was all I had to do to program a remote that I bought online, I could open any car out there.

Remote entry was standard on GT and GTPs

and the way I described is the only way to program your remotes....the manual does not show how to match your remote to your car....a dealership would have to do that

your instructions are incorrect...if you want I will post the manual for a 1999 stating the only way to match a remote to your car is by a dealership

The directions you were following is only to program features not the remote itself.

ah ok I found our answer per the GM service Manual...not the car manual!
Its a little differant then what you posted but here you go:

Remove the ignition key from the ignition lock cylinder.
Close all of the doors.
Remove the MALL PGM fuse from the fuse block.
Insert the ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder.
Turn the ignition to ACC. The body control module (BCM) will perform the following in order to identify the type of BCM installed in the vehicle:
Flash the seat belt indicator 1, 2, or 3 times.
Chime 1, 2, or 3 times.
Turn the ignition to OFF, and then back to ACC within 1 second. The BCM may begin to chime and flash diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). If the BCM has stored any DTCs, refer to Diagnostic System Check - Body Control System in Body Control System.
Open and then close any vehicle door. The BCM will chime in order to confirm that the programming mode has been entered.
Press and hold the transmitter LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for approximately 14 seconds.

Important
After approximately 7 seconds the BCM will chime once to confirm that synchronization has been completed. After approximately 14 seconds the BCM will chime a second time to confirm that the programming has been completed.

I used the instructions posted in the same thread it took me about 5 tries but it finally worked for me, except I did not get any chimes to confirm programming was completed. You also have to do every step within about a half of a second between each one or it will not work. if you do it right and don't hear any chimes then put fuse back in the block, and push one of the buttons, you shoulalso look under the trunk deck to see if you have an AUO# if not keyless entry is not a feature for your vehicle. The correct remote should say (FCC ID:L2C0007T)#9364556-4575 on the back, if not you got the wrong one. Let me know

Actually, my remote says:

GM: 10246215
CANADA: 218 101 487
MODEL/FCC ID: ABO0204T

My '97 used the same remotes.
