hey guys
a few days ago when i had parked on a slope, and i turned on my 2001 GPx, my "low-coolant level" light came on. as soon as the car reached about 180F, the light went off. i drove for about 20 miles continiously monitoring the temperature adn the temperature was pretty steady, between 180-185F.

went home, added coolant, and restarted, but light came on again. the loght goes off as soon as the temp reaches about 175-180F.

this has been going on for quite some time now and the light keeps coming on everytime i start and goes away when the car reaches about 17-180F.

anyone seen this happen before,.... any advice?

thanks in advance

If your coolant reservoir has sensor located at the bottom, I would try to remove that coolant reservoir and I would run water from water hose and turn it upside down while spraying water hose inside it to get rid of any gunk.

It's probably some gunk or the sensor have gunk in it and it loosen up when the coolant reaches higher temperature.

Is the coolant reservoir easy to remove?

Check the sensor on the Radiator, bottom of the radiator cap, remove and clean it (or replace). That is the problem.

Hope this helps.

I am having the same problem with my 1997 Gran Prix. Have flushed engine for the secound time and now in search for the sensor. Does the nylon radiator drain plug screw out. I can get it loseabout a quarter turn but can't get it out. Afraid to break it.

I had a brand new 97 grand prix and that thing was a NIGHTMARE. I had electrical problems almsot from the day i drove it off the lot....but we wont go there...i have a 1996 grand prix now and i had it off the road over 2 years and just recently started using it again...i had the coolent light coming off and on and all i did was clean the coolent sensor and it was fine after that. i'm not sure if the sensor for your gp is going to be in the same place as mine but mine was located on the passenger side of the radiator facing the fender just below the radiator cap. all that held it in place was a small clip. it is black and square. one plug coming off it on the bottom. remove the clip and plug and rinse it out...i used a q-tip to get in it to clean it good. all mine was was a small hole with a metal rod or whatever you want to call it in the hole. the sensor don't move up or down or anything. but i haven't had a problem with it since i've done that.
