Is GLT a Turbo? Stradale360 05-09-2004, 03:22 AM
I was wondering if the stock 850 GLT has a turbo. Thanks nismo4banger 05-10-2004, 06:46 PM Nope. The 850 turbo, R , and T5-R had turbos. I believe the volvo S70 GLT had a low pressure turbo but not the 850 GLT. rdollie 05-12-2004, 05:45 PM Actually that's not quite accurate. The '93 and '94 Volvo 850 GLTs definitely were NA engines. I don't remember if it was 95 or 96 but the GLT became a light-pressure turbo a couple of years after introduction (I had a '94 850 Turbo and '98 S70 T5 around that period.) Nope. The 850 turbo, R , and T5-R had turbos. I believe the volvo S70 GLT had a low pressure turbo but not the 850 GLT. nismo4banger 05-13-2004, 12:06 PM Actually we were both sort of wrong. The 850 had the low pressure turbo only in 97. The name switched to S70 the next year. My dad had a 96 GLT and it had no turbo. http://www.intellichoice.com/reports/vehicleReport.cfm/vehicle_nmb/100003299/year/1997/make/Volvo/model/850 FIREdrIver 06-25-2004, 05:47 PM GLT no turbo. 97 yes...last year. Tommy18 07-26-2004, 09:55 AM I have a 97 850 GLT and it is what the dealer call it Mini Turbo. rdollie 07-26-2004, 10:20 AM I've never heard it called a mini turbo before but the '97 GLT does indeed have a light-pressure turbo (from Mitsubishi.) I have a 97 850 GLT and it is what the dealer call it Mini Turbo. nismo4banger 07-26-2004, 03:15 PM I believe the LPT (low pressure turbo) motor uses a 13g at around 5psi. Where as HPT (high pressure turbo) uses a 16T at about 10.3psi. FIREdrIver 07-29-2004, 10:29 PM OK. So, does anyone know what the 850 GLT 190HP low psi turbo became in 1998 (V70, V90, etc)? How about the 850R for that matter? Thanks. rdollie 07-30-2004, 11:28 AM It became the S70 (GLT). The 850 wagon became the V70. The 850R was not continued in S/V series cars until the 2004 S60R / V70R came out in 2003 (both on the newer P2 platform that replaced the older 850/70 series platform.) OK. I like this car and want to cean it up but can I improve the performane with a chip and such or is it a not very responsive to modifications rdollie 09-02-2004, 10:58 PM Go to the 850 forum at Swedespeed.com or Vvspy.com and you'll find MANY enthusiasts who have added TME/IPD's chip, Wetterauer's, SCT's, BSR's, etc. The short answer is yes - a chip makes a big difference with turbo Volvos, even the low pressure ones like the GLT.
